AT THE EDGE OF THE FRAME

AT THE EDGE OF THE FRAME
By Abdusamad Shafiev

GENRE: Romance, Drama
LOGLINE:

An aspiring Arab screenwriter and a divorced documentary filmmaker face cultural and age barriers, personal traumas, and creative ambitions in New York City, trying to find common ground in the chaos of a megalopolis where a chance encounter turns into passion, conflict, and unexpected healing through art and mutual understanding.

SYNOPSIS:

Sultan, a 28-year-old Arab from Egypt, comes to New York to pursue his dream of becoming a screenwriter, but faces family rejection, financial difficulties, and part-time jobs at a construction site.

Sofia, a 36-year-old director, is going through a painful divorce and is trying to regain faith in herself through documentaries.

Their chance encounter on the Internet and their first meeting in the park turn into a whirlwind romance, where passion mixes with distrust, and creative ambitions with personal demons.

From walks in the park and late—night conversations to quarrels in the kitchen and emotional breakthroughs, their relationship is balanced between hope and despair.

Sultan, struggling with migrant complexes and family pressure, finds a muse in Sofia, but her fear of repeating the mistakes of the past and the age difference become an obstacle. Sofia, in turn, sees talent in him, but cannot get rid of the ghost of her ex-husband, who continues to haunt her.

The film ends with a double climax: after a stormy night where the characters admit their weaknesses to each other, Sofia decides to break off the relationship, fearing a repeat of the toxic scenario. Sultan, despite the pain, returns to his script without giving up his dream, realizing that their story, like ripples on water, has left a mark, even if no one sees it.

In the finale, both are left alone with a choice: to continue digging the "pit" of their ambitions or to find a new path where art and life are intertwined.

GENRE: Drama, romantic tragicomedy.

RUNNING TIME: 90-110 minutes.

REFERENCES: "Malcolm & Marie", "Blue Valentine" (relationship drama), "Her" (psychological depth), "Midnight in Paris" (metaphors of creativity).

AUDIENCE: 25-45 years old, viewers who appreciate psychological depth, stories about difficult relationships and self-realization.

THEMES:

- The illusion of control. The creative characters try to "stage" life, but they turn out to be actors in someone else's scenario.

- Loneliness in the age of connections. Physical intimacy as an attempt to drown out existential emptiness. - Creativity as an escape and a curse.

TONE: Realistic, emotionally intense, with elements of black humor and metaphorical visual poetry.

COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL:

- The universal theme of "love in spite of". - Socially significant issues: migration, age stereotypes, mental health.

WHAT IS THE UNIQUENESS OF YOUR STORY?

- A modern view of relationships through the lens of creativity: The characters literally "write" their story, but they cannot control its plot.

- Ambiguous characters without a clear division into "victims" and "tyrants".

- Mixing of cultural codes .

- The structure of the "double frame" — the chapters are shown from the point of view of both characters, revealing the subjectivity of the truth.

- The use of meta-commentary elements (the characters discuss scenarios, comparing life with cinema).
