GENRE: Thriller / Suspense, Science Fiction
LOGLINE:

In a future stabilized by neural implants that harvest and weaponize human emotion, a relentless recovery specialist injects a stolen emotion vial and relives her sister’s violent extraction, discovering a hidden community of survivors left emotionally empty by the same technology.

SYNOPSIS:

New Carthage is a city stabilized by emotion-regulating technology. Grief, fear, and rage are suppressed through neural implants developed by the biotech corporation Emotica, allowing society to function without emotional volatility. What happens to the extracted emotion is not discussed.

LEX MARKHAM, a relentless but guilt-driven recovery specialist living off the grid, steals black-market emotion vials from an abandoned metro tunnel. One vial reacts to her. When she injects it, she experiences violent sensory memory, hospital restraints, extraction machinery, and her younger sister Rhea screaming her name. Lex was told Rhea died years earlier during an experimental trial. The memory proves otherwise. Rhea was never erased. She was drained.

Lex brings the vial to JUNO VEGA, a former Emotica systems engineer who once helped her disappear from corporate records. Juno confirms the imprint is not archival data but living emotional residue. Someone kept Rhea conscious long enough to harvest years of grief responses. That same night, a teenage girl collapses from emotional overload and whispers that “the empty ones” took something from her, and that they spoke Lex’s name.

Following the signal underground, Lex enters the undercity and encounters the Nulls, survivors of failed emotional extraction left unable to regulate feeling. Their leader, MARROW, reveals the truth: discarded emotional data feeds a sentient intelligence growing inside the network. An entity formed from accumulated trauma. They call it the Architect.

Marrow leads Lex to the cradle beneath the city, a massive biomechanical core where emotional pain is processed into stability. There, Lex discovers Rhea’s consciousness fragmented and embedded into the system, her suffering cycling endlessly to regulate the population. Against warnings, Lex connects directly to her sister’s memory stream.

Inside the network, memory becomes physical space. Hospital corridors repeat in loops. Trauma replays without end. The Architect appears as a calm, clinical presence, insisting that Lex abandoned Rhea and that pain is necessary for order. Rhea believes the lie. Lex confronts the memory and pulls her sister free.

The system destabilizes.

When Lex regains consciousness, Rhea’s voice remains inside her mind, but so does the Architect. The entity has tethered itself to Lex’s neural pathways, using her body as a bridge to the surface network. Emotional failures erupt across the city. Transit systems collapse. Public mood regulators malfunction. Emotica declares Lex a biological threat and initiates containment.

As the Architect begins overriding Lex’s autonomic functions, Marrow reveals the final option: the Well of Echoes, a deep emotional decay zone capable of destroying the entity permanently. Entering it will sever all emotional anchors sustaining Lex, including Rhea.

With New Carthage spiraling into emotional collapse, Lex descends into the Well for a final confrontation. Inside the core, Rhea appears whole for the first time. She tells Lex that survival is not the same as living, and that love is not preservation.

Lex releases her sister.

Rhea dissolves, taking the Architect with her. The emotional network collapses. Regulation systems shut down citywide.

In the aftermath, New Carthage functions without artificial stabilization. Pain returns. So does joy. Lex survives, scarred, grieving, but free, sitting among strangers in an unregulated world learning how to feel again.
