Transgender-positive producers

I'm developing a sort of transgender coming-of age film with my transgender son - was my daughter. Obviously a harder sell than other concepts. I'm wondering what producers their are with positive attitudes towards trans-themed films. They seem to be thin on the ground but they must be out there.

Bob Couttie

I tend to agree with Vitaly, it remains a difficult sell.

Bob Couttie

Thanks Joseph, I've been in contact with Transgender Talent and we're talking.

Who to Call?

I realize this is a simple question - but still, I don’t know the answer. I’ve been told that a good route to obtaining funding for my horror film. She Lives Again, is to just all businesses up and just talk. I’ll do whatever it takes - have already - but does anyone have any good ideas/experience t...

Grants

I was wondering if anyone had any experience/success getting grants in order to produce your films. Would you recommend trying to find a grant writer? Does anyone know if they will work for a producer credit on the film unless it gets funding? If you did use a grant writer how much did it cost, I ha...

Jessica Hebda Lawson

I have found a producer who will be helping me with the finding funds as well as getting a fiscal sponsor in order to qualify for some of the grants that I am looking to apply to.

Vonti McRae

Wow Jessica that’s excellent? Were you able to find them through here? Or did you just pitch to them thru your network?

Ricardo Rangel Jr

Vonti, if in the USA, check your state's arts & culture department and look up a list of filmmakers in your state. Also look in Facebook groups. You will need to have a solid pitch and be upfront about the role your are trying to fill. Good luck!

Agent contract for feature film Screenplay

What do you do when an agent from one of the topmost agencies agrees to read your script but wants you to sign a 3 page submission release which basically takes away all your rights? I have my film registered with the WGA but the release form literally is one sided.

Donn Swaby

I would simply talk to an entertainment lawyer first, find

out their professional opinion

and Congratulations for getting their attention!!!!

SeeK legal advice. Donn is on-point. Don't get ripped off.

Thoughts on Method Acting?

I was script supervising on set this weekend and witnessed something I had never seen before. One of the actors is a method actor. Before and after auditions he stayed in character, so the director knew he would have to navigate this. But on day one of the shoot, he came to the set late and held up...

As an actor (and recently first time director), all I can say is I sense ego at play. Being in character is great, professionalism is just as important. Inconveniencing the whole cast and crew and then calling it method acting is more about ego than craft.

James Drago

Your point about professionalism is what had the crew steaming Monique Amado. Everyone was there on time, working for the love of the project.

Jason Raymaker

There is a difference between fantasy land and reality. Unfortunately, some actors don't know how to distinguish between the two. Sure maybe his character would be late, but that personality needs to be kept in his performance.

Tax deductible donation

I'm producing a short film, and I have an interested investor, but he would only like to invest if he could claim the donation as tax deductible. I can't seem to find any info about how he can do this if we don't have a 501(c)(3) set up since it's a short film. Anyone have any ideas?

Jon Bonnell

Find a fiscal agent. That's a non-profit that will act as your sponsor. Then he can donate the money to them. You will end up falling under their charter and you should be making the film for them to exploit, not yourself, but that's how you get around this.

Alan B. Cox

Does he own a business? Could you advertise something for him? Not a donation but a business expense. You don't need a lawyer, you need an accountant.

Joseph Chastain

www.nyfa.org Once you are tax deductible the person is no longer an investor, but a donor.

film & TV, when done well, are powerful media for storytelling. Storytelling is the only reason, in my view, for the work. The story needs to be good, and the cinematography, design, and editing need to enhance that.

Dr Keith Bound

yes but the science of story telling actually tells us what works and my story telling process does not limit the creativity of the storyteller instead it expands the filmmaker language by aligning cinematic storytelling with the DNA of viewer engagement
