Hope, has been getting up at this time ever since her mother became too ill with emphysema and can't no longer take care of the house or Hope's stepfather. Hope, prepares breakfast for her stepfather before he gets up for work. Hope is exhausted because she also works a part time job, nights, however for Hope, this job is her only happy outlet, to the gray, bitter life she's been living since her beloved mother became sick. Hope's mother is black, as is her stepfather. Her biological father died in action before Hope was born and her stepfather gave Hope his last name. Hope looks exactly like her father, she's white and her stepfather, who sees in Hope, his wife's first and only true love, out of revenge and repressed anger, this stepfather rapes Hope when ever he pleases. Hope must remain quiet about the abuse, her stepfather reminds her constantly, if she wants her mother to have the medical care and medicines she requires, all made possible by her stepfather's health insurance.

But, soon Hope's prince charming walks into the Coffee Shop she works at and for the first time someone is going to bring not only joy, but color into the young woman's life. Gabriel, is not only a charmer, but he has a huge heart and an even bigger bank account. Encouraged by a co-worker, gay, male friend, Hope accepts to go on a secret date with Gabriel.

On their first date, Gabriel gets a smile from the always sad eyes, head down, simply dressed in dark shades, Hope. Little by little Gabriel gets Hope to trust him. As they go on other secret dates she begins to add color to her eyes, and then her lips. Gabriel gives Hope a smartphone, so they can secretly text and face talk with one another late at night in her small, simple bedroom. However, Hope never opens up to Gabriel about the horror she has to face every time her stepfather is horny and enters her room to satisfy his sexual needs, since her mother who's on oxygen, can't do so any longer.

As days pass since Hope has been seeing Gabriel, her stepfather begins to notice Hope's physical change and even more so, her defying demeanor, something her gay co-worker advice her to do, plus the fact that now she's loved and in love for the first time in her life. Filled with suspicion, the stepfather decides one night follows Hope to work where Gabriel is waiting with his private chauffeur and limo. The stepfather follows them around in his car, including to Gabriel's lower Manhattan's apartment. When Hope gets home that night, her stepdad is waiting in the kitchen, cleaning his gun. He orders Hope to wait in her bedroom for him and not to wake up her mother who's in a deep sleep from her medications. Frighten, more than ever, Hope goes up to her room and calls Gabriel to apologize for living his apartment quickly as he tried to make love to her, but moments later, the stepfather is knocking at the door and she quickly hides her smartphone under the bed.

The stepfather wants sex, but for the first time Hope refuses to comply. So, the stepfather begins to violently rape Hope, while Gabriel listens, because she forgot to disconnect the call. Gabriel rushes out and gets on a cab to go to her rescue. The stepfather hears Gabriel's voice shouting to the phone. He picks up the phone and enraged smashes the phone on Hope's face, breaking her nose. The stepfather begins to rape her as he hits her violently. Moments later the bedroom door opens and standing there with holding her husband's gun, is Hope's mother, who tells her husband to get away from her daughter as she demands answers. After the stepfather tells his wife how long he's been raping Hope, her mother shots her daughters abuser twice, one bullet for every year he abused her baby girl, she then passes out from lack of oxygen. Hope trying to get to a phone downstairs, very dizzy, gets up,falls down the stairs, while her stepfather gets up, she reaches for the gun and shots him twice.
