Hi. Film is THE most impactful of artistic mediums, and, as I grew up in L.A., I've been "into" cinema my life.
After acting failed to bring me the level of success I'd hoped for, I took to writing, and, by gosh, found I liked it better!
Some years ago, I wrote a true crime novel (with Kelly Moore) for St. Martin's Press that went on to become a New York Times' bestseller: DEADLY MEDICINE, "a true-life allegory about the nature of human evil and the possibility of choice." To tell that story, I had to meet, interview, then get into the mind of a serial killer and there grapple with her gut-churning, ego-driven compulsions. Ever since, while teaching secondary English in California's Bay Area, I've been yearning to tell the opposite kind of story.
THE OTHER FRUIT is that story, and, as our agent for Deadly Medicine is no longer serving clients, my intention is to find it a publisher. (In the meantime, I'm writing screenplays, both solo and in collaboration, editing others' work, and teaching.)
THE OTHER FRUIT is a 75,300 word multi-storyline, contemporary/ historical fiction, with elements of memoir, self-help, sexuality, and romance. Its focus is an iconic contemporary couple: "a mid-fifties gentleman, a bit bent," and "a reserved young lady who carries herself with a dancer's grace." We're there when the two meet for an initial dinner date, and given glimpses of the adventure it launches, but the core of their story is an evening's hike, several years later, when their relationship teeters on the edge of extinction. The folklore of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Satan, Avalokiteshvara, and Adam and Eve are woven into the tale, as are magicians and witches, shamans and demons, psychiatrists and more common folk. As the pair ascends the fateful hill, the pressure builds on all fronts, each character contributing to the story of self vs. communion. There are no car chases or gunfights, but, in the end, when the plots converge and the prologue is answered, we're left with how a peek beyond the veil might be integrated.
