Character Ages

Curious if you all put in ages for characters when the age isn't really pertinent to that character.

Craig D Griffiths

@Maurice you make me smile. I thought the same thing, then had a realisation,

Doug Nelson

I insert ages as a guide for the Casting Director. I often write TORI (plays 25) in the character intro. It's how you want the character to look - it doesn't matter how old the Actor is. My best applicant for that role is actually 21 - this is where hair/makeup comes in.

Sean Bassett

I always put in the ages, because it helps me develop a greater understanding of who they are.

I feel so overwhelmed!

I read and read scripts to get an idea of how they should be. Then people on here say do it this way or that way. Does anyone else feel that way?

Matthew Njemanze

Hi this is Prince Matthew, I'm really totally overwhelmed. Glad I was here

J.M. Gulmire

That's how it always goes. Everyone has their way of doing things and none is 100% proven for everyone. Just take it as it comes, and when you need advice, seek it from people who have the credits to...

Hey Rick, this is Karen from the Stage 32 team. I just wanted to let you know I moved your post from Post-Production to Your Stage (for links and promotions), as it fits much better there. Let me know if you have any questions and all the best to you!

Rick Reynolds

Thanks, Karen.

Where do you write?

I need inspiration for where to write. I always find myself writing at my desk in my apartment. It's getting old so I want to know where you guys sit down and write. I'd like to be inspired to write elsewhere than my boring desk with a bad view. The park? On a rooftop at sunset? In the car? On a mountain? Where??

Sherry Landrum

We should note that the conversation switched to another subject under "good places to write" to "collaboration." It's a very good subject. I'm engaged in a collaboration right now on a Musical. I've had to learn some new modes of creating lyrics. So far, so good.

Shawn Speake

That's great to hear, Sherry! I started to write a comment about that when I re-read the thread and noticed Sarah asked to collaborate. It's her post. No worries here!

Sherry Landrum

@Shawn Thanks.

DIALOGUES – LONG vs SHORT

Hi, writers! I'd like to talk about length of dialogues in feature scripts. I always loved long ones. In fact, I think that ability to make a 10+ pages dialogue – it's what separates men from boys. But when I started submitting my stuff to contests, absolutely every reader told me same – shorter is...

Doug Nelson

Keep in mind the acting talent available to you. Very few present day Actors can deliver an extended aria or a long soloquie so it's best to keep the dialog in two/three lines separated by some action or cutaways. It makes everyone's life simpler.

Phillip E. Hardy, "The Pro From Dover"

Kyle

Awesome post.

Bill Albert

Really depends on what type of script you're doing. Even if it's just dialogue you have to keep things moving. Just watched the original "Fail-Safe" yesterday. Absolutely brilliant. It's all dialogue but you can't look away from the characters and situation.

LA Audio Guy (Fractalzend Audio)

This pandemic started and they told us all to "stay home, stay safe." The promise was a solution in "about two weeks." Many of us hunkered down, quite a few rebelled. A new wave of politics has taken a turn.

When pushed into a corner, creative people turned to their crafts stronger and harder than b...

Why no Who Done It?

Here's a question for you. What happened to the Who-Done-It genre? Were all the ideas taken by the mystery shows of the 80s? Ridiculous! Come on, writers! Who's got a good "guess who" mystery in them? Why aren't you writing it? EDIT: I suppose the better question would be 'Why doesn't Hollywood like...

Got you. I'm not versed in whodunits. Thanks for the insight, William.

Carlos Pena

Wasn't AMC/Netflix The Killing a WhoDoneIt?

Jon Griffin

I have written a parody of the genre. It takes place in Los Angeles in 1945 and the characters in the screenplay are parodies of the actors and actresses of the "Whodunit" genre. It also has the slang of the 1940s.
