A true story following a family of Polish captives trying to survive as they escape a Siberian labor camp during WW2.
SYNOPSIS:
Eastern Poland, 1941. In the midst of the second world war, the
Zyla family lives a modest life, putting their faith in the Lord.
Anthony aspires to be an honorable man like his father, while Mary
tries to grow up too quickly, resulting in her barren womb.
During an invasion in a small village, Mitch is taken captive by
Russian soldiers, while Sara escapes with her daughter Wanda. She
finds herself on the Zyla’s doorstep one night, divulging news of
captivity and murder, only to flee; leaving Wanda behind.
Adjusting to the families newest edition, Mary takes Wanda under
her wing just as the Red Army invades their land, forcing them
into their military caravan. They travel for weeks through snowy,
mountainous terrain facing hyperthermia and starvation.
Arriving in Siberia, pandemonium sets in as the frightened Poles
deboard the trains and search for their loved ones. Commander
Zloykov announces they’re officially prisoners of war and shows
them their new living quarters inside a labor camp.
Each day comprises of long, strenuous work hours and not nearly
enough food. The men cut down trees and build barracks. The women
sew and do laundry, while the kids attend schooling; manipulated
by Russian propaganda. Mitch and his pariah’s formulate a plan of
escape which results in several deaths.
Mitch is saved by a serendipitous encounter with Mary, where
chemistry sparks and a relationship dawns. An announcement is
made, enlisting volunteers to join the Ander’s Army. Desiring to
do something noble and unpermitted to partake in escapes, Anthony
is hellbent on joining against his father’s advice.
Time goes on and there’s an outbreak of typhus, resulting in many
more deaths. The Zyla’s find themselves at a loss while another
escape is planned. Anthony joins arms in Africa while Mary, Mitch
and Wanda are left to survive on their own.
After Mary finds herself with pneumonia, the clock is ticking and
a new plan must be enacted. Utilizing their talents, Mary sews
together a uniform and Wanda teaches Mitch Russian. They make
their escape, soon to realize leaving the prison proves to be far
easier than surviving the rough winter terrain.
Mitch collapses beside Mary and Wanda at the edge of Poland,
finding the crumbling village derelict. Is it too late? Through
their hardships and starvation, the family bands together in
courage, unified through strength as their faith is tested.
