“CAROLINE/PEACHES” (daughter) adoring, witty, funny, full time nurse, resourceful, determined, a fighter, looking for her own way in this crazy world, 26 yrs old, attractive

“ROBERT” (father) drunk, abusive (physically) is killed when he drove his car into a tree. (prior to story)

Setting;

Small sleepy town texas, 1974’ish, modest middle-class homes, factory town.

Synopsis;

“Desperate for a life of her own, a daughter does the unspeakable to help her grieving mother find companionship.”

The novel, Closet Full of Broken Canes, is set in a small sleepy southern town in the early 1970’s.

Caroline, the daughter, yearns to have a life of her own.

After the death of Robert her drunk and abusive father, she moves out of her mother’s(mommas) house and begins living the independent life she dreamed of.

However, it isn’t long before “momma” calls her crying that she needs Caroline to come home to help her, something horrible has happened. Feeling guilty for leaving momma, she goes to the house.

Upon entering mommas house Caroline sees an almost comatose man sitting in a wheelchair in the living room.

She soon learns that momma has mistakenly overmedicated the poor man with sedatives.

Caroline being a nurse insists that they bring the ill man to the hospital immediately. Momma pleads that he stay with her, they struggle and the man is accidently killed. Burying him in the backyard becomes the only option they have to conceal this terrible tragedy.

Sadly, that option becomes the norm as the two women again and again lure unsuspecting men into the home. First, injecting the men with powerful drugs that partially paralyze them and induce amnesia. Once the men awaken, the women then convince him that he is Robert. Having someone to care for keeps momma happy and Caroline hopes she can then move on with her own life.

Yet, they find themselves in the backyard digging graves in the dark again. Mommas carelessness with the drugs as well as a broken cane to the head of one man who attacks them, keeps the storyline alive (pun intended).

Caroline’s life is becoming ever more complicated as momma accidently kills a new Robert once more. Can Caroline ever find the happiness she craves or will momma’s unstable life keep her trapped in a cycle of deceit and murder
