WOMAN'S BEST FRIEND
By Joey Day Hargrove

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

When a lonely 30-something’s beloved dog magically transforms into a very enthusiastic person, she must teach her out-of-control, drama-inducing BFF how to be human, while realizing she has a lot to learn herself.

SYNOPSIS:

STACEY (32) A silent spectator of her own life. Stacey’s dad live a few states away and she is an only child with no close friends and a mundane cubicle job. Stacey is awkward and shy but has been forcing herself to online date in hopes of finally meeting The One. She is lonely and isolated, fearing her life is passing her by. The only time Stacey is really comfortable is when she’s with her dog --the single bright spot in her life.

Stacey’s beloved golden retriever GOLDIE is twenty-something in human years, three in dog years. Goldie’s magical transformation into a human has not dulled her dog-like qualities: playful, enthusiastic, loving, loyal, easily distracted, and alwayswanting to go to the park. Goldie doesn’t know much about being human, but she knows a lot about Stacey, and it is her self-appointed mission to help make Stacey happier.

On Stacey’s 32nd birthday…

After another disastrous blind date, STACEY comes home and celebrates with her only real friend – her sweet, loyal golden retriever, GOLDIE. When Stacey makes an offhanded birthday wish for Goldie to be human so she could at least reassure Stacey that there is someone out there for her, she never expected it to come true. However, Stacey wakes the next morning to a strange, naked woman in her bed (and well into her personal space) begging to go to the park.

Act One: Goldie (the now-human) proves pretty easily that she is indeed Stacey’s dog: she knows the nickname Stacey calls her, the details of the wish and is still obedient enough to sit on cue. As Stacey tries to come to terms with this strange turn of events, Goldie stays fixated on going to the park. When there, Goldie steals a dog’s frisbee and causes a scene when she “checks out” a human man by sniffing his butt. Back at home, Goldie is over-the-moon that she gets to enjoy people food, but she hasn’t quite mastered the bathroom yet – instead she happily squats in the backyard. Stacey has to go to work but subdues Goldie’s over-the-top guilt-inducing disappointment at being left by inviting her to Happy Hour after work. Stacey’s whole office goes, but Stacey never wanted to go on her own, but now that she has a human friend….maybe she can get up the courage to talk to her office crush, STEVEN.

Act Two: Goldie, home alone, runs off a nosy neighbor as she enjoys having full access to everything (especially the food) – with the amazing access of hands! By the time Stacey returns, Goldie has trashed the entire house. Stacey realizes that there is no way Goldie can pass for a human and declares that Happy Hour is off. But Goldie begs and pleads that she can do this, reminding Stacey she even has a certificate of obedience. Stacey just needs to tell her what to do. Stacey attempts to give Goldie “human lessons” – focusing first on not telling Steven that Stacey is in love with him. (This takes much longer than Stacey anticipated.) When Stacey decides they should wear jeans to the bar, so it doesn’t look like they tried too hard – Goldie is confused because she is trying so hard! She feels like all Stacey’s human lessons are basically lying. (She isn’t exactly wrong.) When they arrive at the bar, Stacey’s coworkers stare as Goldie (overwhelmed by all the exciting smells) goes into full “zoomies,” running very fast laps around the patio.

Act Three: Goldie meets the coworkers, including the much-discussed Steven. Stacey tries to cover for Goldie’s odd behavior, by repeatedly declaring how “quirky” her friend is. Goldie following the instructions that she must act like she’s never heard Steven’s name before, responds with – did you say “Neven?” when Steven introduces himself to her. She’s quirky, all right! Stacey really enjoys finally talking to Steven outside of the office, even his confession that he has cats and isn’t a dog person doesn’t deter her, although Goldie is offended and horrified! There’s also a new guy at Happy Hour who is immediately smitten with Goldie. Things take a turn, though, when Steven’s new girlfriend shows up. Stacey is disappointed to learn that Steven had been single until recently, realizing that her lack of confidence may have kept her from the possibility of a relationship with him. As Goldie ushers Stacey out of the bar she reassures her that there is someone out there for her. It’s Stacey’s wish come true.

The Series

The series will focus on Goldie learning how to behave like a human while Stacey learns how to behave a little more like a dog: enthusiastic, care-free and spontaneous. Episodes will focus on everyday events that become big challenges for the duo: online dating, office parties, nosy neighbors, puppysitting, shopping malls and more. At its heart it is a celebration of female friendship. Stacey’s constant search for a boyfriend is balanced by Goldie’s desire to consume every human experience she can – including every man she meets. Ideally, the series will end when Stacey embraces all the lessons Goldie has to teach her and finds the courage to enthusiastically pursue her own happiness, allowing Goldie to return to her dog form.
