About Jason

Jason Mabana was born in Belgium from a Sicilian and Filipino heritage. Jason first trained in Belgium, as a hip-hop and contemporary dancer. At the age of 17, he moved to London to study Dance at Lewisham College and furthered his training at the Rambert School. During his time at Rambert, Jason made various short dance pieces, which brought him in the choreographic world. His first work has been featured in BBC young dancer, Cloud dance festival and Mr Wonderful, a show directed by Mathew Bourne in commemorative to Jonathan Olivier. Jason also has a postgraduate diploma from the London Contemporary Dance School.

As a dancer Jason began his career as an apprentice with Akram Khan Company for the solo Chotto Desh. Jason continued his career with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company performing her work Strange Bloom. He then Joined Wayne McGregor performing a duet in collaboration with artist Haroon Mirza and Candoco Dance Company performing works by Trisha Brown, Yasmeen Godder, Alexander Whitley, Hetain Patel, and Jerome Bel.

Jason has recently choreographed ‘Requiem for Aleppo’ that premiered at Sadlers Wells in April 2017 and at the Fringe Festival. The show has raised more than 100.000 pounds for two Syrian charities, ‘Techfugees’ and ‘Syria relief’. Requiem For Aleppo has been nominated for the Asian Arts Awards and the Amnesty International Freedom Of Speech Award. In 2017, Jason has been selected as one of the best 10 UK Young Artists by UKYA. As a result, his piece was performed in Seoul - Korea. In November 2017, Jason collaborated with Panos Malactos for a duet called 'Mama' premiered in Nicosia December 2017. At the moment, Jason is creating a full length piece for Black Box Dance Company called No Sex that will premiere in Denmark in September 2018 and will soon choreograph for The University of the Arts in Amsterdam and the Rambert School.
