For my latest video I tried to learn how to isolate one color in a black and white video. I was successful with the red jacket. My question comes because my intention was to have different colors (yellow boots and blue hat) fade in one at a time, until all the clothes were colorized. I could not figure out how to do it without the other colors fading out while the new color faded in. I use Sony Vegas Pro. Any tips for how to achieve this?
Yeah! I started with color and then turned it black and white in post.

Expand commentHi Julie. I don't know Sony Vegas Pro. I heard it was a great editing program, not sure about the color. I'm a professional colorist, so let's try and work through this. I'm assuming what you've shot is in color. There's 2 approaches to this. You'll need to figure out how your software is configured and what it's capable of.
Approach 1 - Starts by removing all the color and bringing back each color, one at time.
Approach 2 - Starts by removing the colors you don't want and leaving the color you do.
All easier said than done. Part of the complexity here is isolating the colors. Many colors blend in with the colors next to them. It sounds like you've isolated Red, can you create separate isolations for other colors on different layers or nodes in Vegas? If so that might be your answer. If you're still having trouble with that in Vegas, do you know any other programs that might offer you the ability to color correct? Not sure this really gets to the meat of an answer for you.
Look at y'all talking shop! I love this - how did the final product come out, Julie Brett?

Your site looked interesting, so I thought I'd give it a try. I don't consider myself a heavy, or even a moderate poster on forums. I don't find the need to hear myself talk. It's an interesting group here, so I'll see if I might stretch those boundaries a bit. I hope you are well and safe during this interesting time.
You're in a great and supportive place on Stage 32. We have the most positive online community on the planet, so we're glad you've joined us. Stay safe during this quarantine.
Hi David

Are you working on any project lately that is stretching your creativity. I know that's usually challenged by the budget alone, but I mean more the meaningful way, like trying to achieve a look or feel with the tools at hand.

This is an odd time for all of us. Nobody knows when things re-start nor what the effects will be upon budgets. Heck, even how we will shoot actors without masks on and what insurance and bonding requirements for productions will be. As such realistically all is on hold or totally stopped. So I am only reading some scripts to see if the are worth pursuing. Meanwhile I will start into development on a TV series as a way to keep off of the streets a do something.
Creative challenges that are not involved with working around an impediment like a budget or recent film school grad is an interesting question. While adapting what you have to the task at hand is one part of what we do, the little things that we can plan for and achieve without anyone knowing how is probably the closest to a challenge on that level. Things like planning weeks in advance for a reflection off of a set piece at a specific point in a dolly move is worth a chuckle of accomplishment, having anyone actually notice is the actual challenge. Adapting equipment and ideas toward as you want to see on a screen is second nature to anyone who has done much location work, or preferably documentaries. You work with what you have, and you only have what you brought. Intermingling techniques from various types of productions is a life saver when the one thing you can throw at the picture is creativity. As I said there is a lot to learn before honestly considering yourself a DP. A couple of decades of shooting everything, is a good background. The kiddies do not want to hear that. Artistic challenges are much more interesting, but it means spending more time explaining the choices than doing them. Those are the things that make me happy in screenings. For those artistic choices where I do not have to convince the world to do what is right the combinations of shot staging, lighting, movement and lens are what we wish to bring together to the best artists effect, even if I am the only one that knows it :-)
Are you working or in the waiting stages. Post has an advantage of fewer people and room, but that probably doesn’t mean the clients are comfortable. I’m sure it is easier for you if there aren’t clients present, but some of us like to keep very close control over the images.
While I can think wishfully, this really isn’t going to end util there is a vaccine.
