SPIRIT OF THE RAIN

SPIRIT OF THE RAIN
By John F Tupper

GENRE: Animation, Adventure
LOGLINE:

A clumsy young macaw's family is captured by pet trappers, and he can only save them, and his rainforest home, by partnering with the enemy, and a funny bunch of rainforest creatures, to become more powerful than he ever imagined.

SYNOPSIS:

The hero of my story is Chico, or "fluff-head" according to his friends. He’s an eager young macaw who just can’t wait until his dad gets home so they can plan his first flying lesson. But Dad is captured by pet trappers, the “Ground Demons” from Chico’s bedtime stories. At last light, as the rain falls, Chico vows to rescue his dad. But there is that “can’t fly yet” issue. So, in the morning, Chico clumsily tries to fly, but he’s swatted off his branch by a cranky, ‘know-it-all,’ sloth. But he’s flying! He flies to the morning gossip hangout, the clay cliffs, where he crash-lands into a flirtatious female, named Amor, who was secretly raised by a human, i.e., the enemy. Amor takes him to meet her human, and Chico freaks out. But the human, named Yako, is a native-born wildlife biologist, and the last descendant of the ancient Guardians. He’s dealing with Carmen Londoño De La Vega, a visiting high-born government official who is bent on turning the forest reserve into a tourist trap. But when Chico explains that his dad, and others, have been captured by ground demons, they hatch a plan to recruit some allies, find the trapper camp and free everyone. On the hunt for the camp Amor is captured. Chico is devastated, but he’s convinced to press on. He finds Amor, his family, and others in cages. Two of the three trappers have gone to burn Chico’s Island to drive the rest of the flock into flying nets. Chico, and crew, defeat the third pet trapper, and release Chico’s family. They all fly to warn the flock, but their island is already ablaze. Now, only the Spirit of the Rain can quench the flames. And only the prayer from a Guardian, can call the Spirit. Meanwhile, Yako, the last Guardian, piloting an ultralight, flies into the exploding net, saving the flock, but sinks with it into the river. Chico musters his courage and convinces Carmen, that, even though her ancestors took the Guardians away, she could speak the prayer and become a new Guardian. So she does. Chico and the flock fly in a great rising spiral, chanting the Guardian prayer to the Spirit of the Rain. Clouds gather. Thunder rolls, and the drenching tropical rain quenches the fires. The island is saved. Yako survives. Now, Chico, and Amor look out on a future where their ancient friendship with the New Guardians is reborn.
