A lesbian surgeon battles through years of bullying, homophobia and sexism to come out during the intolerant climate of the AIDS pandemic.
SYNOPSIS:
Growing up in California’s Napa Valley, Cori Clemons is bullied for being a tomboy. Cheered on by her childhood friend, Pippa, she attends medical school and becomes a physician in 1970s San Francisco. Cori comes out as lesbian to her fellow resident, Lauren. Against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis and a sexist and homophobic culture, Cori meets Dana, a chef; they fall in love.
Cori and Dana move to Cori's hometown to pursue their careers. After a decade apart, Cori reconnects with Pippa. Cori competes with co-worker, Michael, for a fellowship under the tutelage of Finn, a renowned cardiologist. Dana pressures Cori to live openly gay, but Cori worries it will jeopardize her career, not to mention a relationship with her parents. Cori befriends David, a dying AIDS patient, who helps her navigate questions regarding her faith.
David passes away. In a twist, we learn David’s partner bullied Cori throughout her adolescence. The tug-of-war between Cori and Dana intensifies. Under the threat of being fired, Cori must choose between her career or living her truth.
