OPPOSITE SIDES is a one-hour drama series that follows the journey of Cori Clemons, a lesbian heart surgeon, as she experiences the challenges and triumphs of life, drawing strength from her faith, friendships, and love. Set against the backdrop of 1960s Northern California during her childhood, the story unfolds through various stages of her adulthood, spanning decades into the mid-2010s.
SYNOPSIS:
OPPOSITE SIDES tracks American life through the eyes of Cori Clemons. Growing up in 1960s Napa, California, Cori, is a tomboy who struggles with both her sexual orientation and being bullied throughout her adolescence. This doesn’t stop her from achieving her goals of attending the University of San Francisco (enduring the sexist '70s) and becoming a highly skilled heart surgeon.
Despite the intolerant climate created by the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Cori comes out as lesbian to Lauren, a fellow medical resident. Lauren responds with love and compassion. Together, they watch the AIDS crisis unfold in front of them, taking countless lives. Around this time, Cori meets Dana, a woman she’s immediately taken with. They fall in love and, over the span of decades, build a life together.
We meet Cori in 2015, during a critical period: she is sixty-one-years old, about to get married for the first time, and considering a seismic shift of whether to retire from her beloved medical career to enter the world of politics. Similar to the storytelling techniques employed by the series, FIREFLY LANE and THIS IS US, through flashbacks, we participate in Cori’s evolution from a scared and ashamed girl to a confident woman who, guided by her faith and the power of love, helps others find their truth.
