By Susan Lander

GENRE: Romance, Comedy
LOGLINE: When a high-powered White centrist senator encounters her Black free-spirited old flame, now a famous actress, she embraces her second-chance love affair and risks losing her marriage and political career.

SYNOPSIS:

Senator MIRIAM MARKS and her attorney husband ANDREW are seemingly the perfect couple, but after many decades of marriage and a daughter, AMY, their life is secure but uninspired. In preparation for Miriam’s upcoming re-election bid, they travel from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans to attend an elite week-long retreat. On a walk around Bourbon Street, they run into former movie star DIANA FOX, who is singing at a blues club. Unbeknown to Andrew, Miriam and Diana were old flames whose relationship was never consummated. While Miriam is initially reluctant to see Diana, Andrew, a big fan of Diana’s classic movies, insists they all get together. Miriam spends more and more time with Diana, ultimately beginning an affair. GARY FULLERTON, who is running against Miriam for her Senate seat, sees Miriam leaving the retreat one too many times and follows her. Gary snaps photos of Miriam and Diana in what could be a compromising position. He then approaches Miriam’s husband with sly innuendos about what Miriam is doing on her breaks from the retreat and threatens to release the photos publicly unless Miriam drops out of the race. Andrew denies it, saying they’re just old friends. The photos go public. Miriam and Diana face a whirlwind of unwanted media scrutiny. Andrew is stunned when Miriam admits that she slept with Diana, and pressures her to deny and end the relationship. Diana, frustrated and about to lose her singing gig and a possible Hollywood blockbuster comeback, pulls away from Miriam. Andrew and a heartbroken Miriam return to D.C. Miriam chooses Andrew and the status quo but Andrew, still reeling from the revelation, leaves their marriage anyway. Miriam considers ending her re-election campaign. Alone for the first time in her life, Miriam confronts the secret she has been living, and resolves to fight for a new life in keeping with her true self. She comes out as gay and attracts unexpected allies, including her own family. She returns to New Orleans and wins Diana back. On election eve she wins the election, with Diana and her family by her side. Her rival earns a fitting comeuppance.
