GENRE: Sci-fi, Drama
LOGLINE:

In a world where troublesome feelings can be erased, an embittered protestor seizes the opportunity of a power cut to try to dissuade a clinic's clients from having their procedure.

SYNOPSIS:

A weary protestor - Hope - loiters outside a pristine clinic, making attempts to stop the clinic’s clients from having their procedure. The clients are there to forget their troublesome memories and feelings, making Hope’s attempts futile.

Hope distracts the Concierge and slips inside the building, but there is an additional set of internal doors, so she is stuck in the door well. The best she can do is block the internal entrance as some clients approach, pulling out the same old protest mantra. Her words fall on deaf ears, but then a power cut strikes - trapping her and three clients in the door well.

Hope seizes the opportunity to up her game - rather than utter general protest slogans, she quizzes each client in turn, hoping to appeal to their better nature. Priti wants to forget that she has cheated on her fiancé - but Hope challenges that if she erases those memories, or even just erases the remorse, how can she be sure she won’t stray again?  Celine is there to forget the abusive behaviour of her husband. Hope challenges her that perhaps this isn’t a one-off occasion - perhaps he is a serial abuser, and she just doesn’t know that she has been here before. Clyde refuses to be challenged, but Hope doesn’t need his permission - she implies that Clyde is addicted to having the procedure. In turn, she reveals that she once had some bad feelings erased, which had devastating consequences.

As the power comes back on, both sets of doors open. Clyde and Celine head inside. Priti turns to the exit, much to Hope’s delight. As Clyde emerges from the clinic, it is clear that he has had the procedure - he is a lost cause. Celine also appears to have been wiped, but as she drifts towards her husband’s car, she suddenly swerves to Priti’s car - both of them now able to rebuild their lives. Hope smiles - hope is officially back in town!

Unique concept, Kat Rollinson. What does "the opportunity of a power cut" mean?

thanks Nate Rymer !

Kat Rollinson

thanks Maurice Vaughan ! And for the helpful question - the power cut traps them in the doorway as they are stuck between internal and external sliding doors. I will try to clarify that somehow!

Stage32 just featured this as "Logline of the Day". Hence, I think I am justified in self-rating 5 :)
