SYNOPSIS:

The year is 1976. The curtains are closing on the golden age of cinema. Across Australia, the once-glorious standalone theatres, cathedrals of dreams and flickering light, are shutting their doors, replaced by the cold glow of modern multiplexes.

For 13-year-old Theo, a shy, wide-eyed boy from a suburban working-class neighbourhood, the local Palace Theatre is more than a cinema; it’s a living world of magic, escape, and connection. When he lands a weekend job as a trayboy, selling choc-tops and lollies during intermission, Theo finally feels part of the show he’s always adored.

Inside the velvet walls of the Palace, everyone watches the same film, breathes the same moments, and leaves changed together. It’s intimate. It’s personal. It’s cinema!

But when a new multiplex opens nearby, sprawling, loud, and packed with bars, restaurants, and arcade machines, the spell is broken. The experience becomes bigger, yet somehow emptier. The audience fragments, and the magic fades.

As the Palace faces closure, Theo clings to the theatre’s fading light, forming friendships with its eccentric staff, a wistful usherette, a broken projectionist, a sharp-tongued candy bar girl, and learns that change, like the end of a film, can be both beautiful and heartbreaking.
