In this challenge, members were asked to write a scene of conflict. Remember that "conflict" does not necessarily mean "a scene where two people fight"! It means a scene in which two characters with opposing points of view attempt to get what they want in the scene. So, what do they each want? What methods do they use in an attempt to get it? Seduction? Deceit? Force? Honesty? Are they successful in their attempts? The possibilities are endless!
We're back in the Writers' Room this afternoon for the Write Now Challenge Webcast: Your Goals for the Remainder of 2021 For this challenge, using the Breakdown Webcast: Goal Setting Worksheet as your guide, write down three screenwriting goals you have for the remainder of 2021.
Sarah Cornelius is an Actor, Screenwriting Coach, and Executive at Whitewater Films. She made her screen debut in the acclaimed short film LEAVE YOU IN ME. Her vulnerably raw work in the film garnered her Best Actress Award wins at the NYC PictureStart Film Festival and LA's Show Off Your Short Film Festival. She's guest starred on numerous television series and recently appeared in a supporting role in the Lifetime TV movie DESPERATE WIDOWS. On the producing side, Whitewater Films recently released their latest film, SMALL ENGINE REPAIR with Jon Bernthal, which was produced by Rick Rosenthal and developed by Sarah.
Write a 1-3 page scene that you will actually be able to shoot within the rest of 2022. Make sure it is producible for a reasonable budget. Limit characters, locations, and action - but give us a compelling story in 3 pages!
In this challenge, members were asked to pick their favorite antagonist or villain from film, television or literature and in - ONLY ONE PAGE - write a monologue from his or her point of view. The participants could frame this as an interrogation, a negotiation, a confession, or a conspiratorial conversation. Most importantly, writers has to make sure the scene had conflict, and the character's point of view in his or her voice. During the webcast we heard from some of our favorite protagonists, including Loki from the Marvel Universe, Terence Fletcher of Whiplash, Commodus from Gladiator, Jack Bynes of Meet the Parents, and Lex Luther of Superman among many others.
