Getting into voice acting

Hello my name is Tahachi and I've been very interested in voice acting for some time now. I love anime, movies and video games especially. I have always loved the voice acting in some of these amazing video games over the years and have always wanted to be a part of that.

I'd like to get started somehow in voice acting and any guidance on where to start with some gigs for beginners, equipment like a decent microphone to start with, software and anything else. I live in Michigan and I'm about an hour from Detroit. Thank you

Talus Night

Hi Tahachi, much like yourself I dig animation, movies, etc. I started VO classes in person and Zoom with TVAS:The Voice Actor Studio in September here in Las Vegas. Check out youtube video's by Booth Junkie he's pretty good at recommendations and such but regardless there's a lot of video's there to check out for VO equipment and stuff. Do your research and due diligence so you don't shoot yourself in the foot so to speak in trying to get out there without knowing what's up. FYI..I got myself a Rode NT1A mic which for the price is really Good....Best of luck

Thank you very much for the information and your time. Much appreciated and I will look into the information you've given me.

Hey Tachachi! That's awesome to hear! So before you invest in equipment, where are you on your voice acting journey?

Tahachi Hardrick

Right now I'm still figuring out where to start.

Lisann Valentin

It looks like you have acting experience, which is awesome because you have a foundation. There are so many online VO classes nowadays and you don't need any equipment to start. I'd say start with those, beginner VO classes (commercial and video game). Then when you're ready to get equipment and create a demo, that same network will help you. I can certainly recommend some classes but always ask around because what works for one person might not work for another.

Tahachi Hardrick

Not as extensive as I'd like but some. I will definitely look into beginner vo classes and maybe try to find some commercial or video game gigs to help me gain practice and experience. Thank you again for taking time out of your day to give me some guidance.

Tahachi Hardrick I just realized Masterclass has a course called "Nancy Cartwright Teaches Voice Acting" Most likely not as in-depth as a real VO class but it could be helpful. I will check it out and let you know if it is worth your time. I have a yearly subscription. I've learned a lot from other classes like Comedy from Steve Martin and Choreography from Parris Gobell. There is a wealth of knowledge and for me, it helped me figure out where to put my efforts.

Hey, Stephanie Ciccarelli, great information, thank you! We have an entire tag dedicated to Voice Acting in our Stage32 Education: https://www.stage32.com/education/tag/voice-acting

Some of them touch on it, some of them are specifically just for voice acting - it looks like page 2 has a slew of them!

Thank you, Karen "Kay" Ross!
