Is Selling Your Animation Screenplay Abroad?

Hello everybody, I was recently encouraged to reach out to animation production houses in France, Europe, and essentially overseas as I’ll have more opportunity to produce my feature screenplay than I will with the big animation studios in America. I believe I was told that the US based Studios tend to produce more of their own known writers than any fresh IP. Wondering what your thoughts are on that. Thanks!

Laurie Ashbourne

This is true. And it is less expensive. But understand that most animation houses in other countries are service houses -- meaning they need to be paid for their services. You can likely find one who will meet and discuss the costs and style so you have a more well-rounded package to find investors and talent.

Thank you so much for your insights, Laurie!

Bob Harper

Laurie is correct. Also, many countries offer incentives based on a point system for areas of production created within their country, such as writer, director, composer, etc. Many times, when I've tried dealing with some of these companies, their offer for the screenplay and the rights associated with it was unfavorable to the writer, since they would benefit more if the writer were someone from their country.

thank you, Rich, fortunately I was able to connect with one of the moderators here who has a studio in Texas and they’re working on a proposal now

Maurice Vaughan

That's great, Gregory Bonds! Congratulations!
