Animation : Who uses 3dsMax for creating assets for Unreal Engine? by Jay Greathouse

Who uses 3dsMax for creating assets for Unreal Engine?

I've been studying up on using Unreal Engine for real time animation. It seems that 3dsMax is preferred by some to create animatable assets. What is your experience?

Faruku Sayyadi

i use 3ds max for unreal engine. how can I help you?

Jay Greathouse

We're looking for animators with knowledge and experience importing Daz3D assets into Unreal Engine with Reallusion’s Character Creator and iClone and producing with MoCap in Unreal Engine. If we are approached by an animator with an alternative production pipeline, we are open to other ideas.

Faruku Sayyadi

meaning you don't mean the combination of 3ds max and unreal?

Jay Greathouse

Thank you Faruku Sayyadi for your response. After receiving opinions from several sources more informed than myself, I am now under the impression that using 3ds max to rig my Daz3D assets for animation with Unreal Engine and convert the texture maps is extremely labor intensive and too costly in time (and money) to pursue. Further, it seems that the Reallusion products will do this economically. I wish it were otherwise, especially since there appears to be many people familiar with 3ds max compared with the Reallusion products but even many of these people do not like the idea of rigging Daz3D assets. I am still open to hearing other informed opinions. What do you think about this?

Rod Burutsa

Daz3D now has the Daz to Unreal Bridge plugin that allows you to import Daz Studio characters and assets into Unreal Engine. I've had some issues with importing the characters with the clothing, so the clothing might have to be imported separately. They also have a plugin for Blender if you are interested in open source software.

Hey, Rod Burutsa! Thanks so much for that information - super helpful! This thread was started 2 years ago, though, so it's likely the subject needs updating all together - any chance you'd be willing to start a new post here in the Animation Lounge with your recommendation? https://www.stage32.com/lounge/animation

Thanks Karen. I decided to leave the comment for anyone that reaches the post via search that may be having a similar issue. The post would seem out of context outside of this thread. But I'd be glad to engage in conversations in the Animation lounge on more recent topics.

Thanks, Rod, that's very kind of you! I hope you're having a lovely weekend!
