As Gen-AI technology becomes better integrated into filmmaking, several important legal and practical issues emerge: Does using Gen-AI video affect my ability to own my film? Does it affect the marketability of my film? Does using Gen-AI in my films raise ethical questions about the rights of artists? Challenges to copyright protection, questions surrounding database seeding, and the process of registering the copyright to works that incorporate AI elements underscore the need for filmmakers to understand this new and fast-evolving technology.
In this course, we will study key legal and business aspects of using Gen-AI in your films. Along the way, you will learn the history and application of copyright law to works by non-human creators (the "human authorship" rule) and learn practical guidelines for registering works incorporating Gen-AI elements, as well as the legal implications of doing so. Along the way, we will dive into ways to address AI-specific concerns in key agreements used in the film and television industry. Mastering these topics is critical to ensuring that your creative work is both legally secure and positioned for success.
