Hey everyone. I wasn't sure what section to post I thought this category best. I wanted to get your feedback on what the benefits of joining a union are or even the non-beneficial things. I've been getting a lot more work as extra this year especially dancer extra and I just filled out my first sag credit form. I heard if you fill out enough you get forced into sag is this a good thing? If any of you could shed some light would be helpful. I'm still learning a lot in this industry .

unions are good when earning scale. many of the biggest gigs are union. actors sometimes do get intimidated by sag for working non union, but you can do both union and non union work, regardless of what sag or anyone says. don't let sag or anyone tell you otherwise. many actors in LA claim f/c financial core to work non union.
I'm curious who you head this from? That you get forced into SAG. No one can force you to join SAG. Or any guild or union.

Another actor I was working along side on set with told me that,I know you can't believe everything you hear,thank you for the feedback...Most of my jobs are copy and credit, even the one I got sag credit for I don't mind my first year getting work have to start somewhere, but If most sag jobs are paid..I think I'd like to aim to be sag...even though I'm a long ways away just trying to do my research long term. I appreciate the responses and feedback.
don't join a union until you have to. since sag/aftra merged there are less jobs.

A lot of work are non union non guild. Even if you do join sag, you can still work non union despite what they or anyone say. Don't need to take anyone's word for it just research financial core status. 99% of my jobs are non union, and I always have sag actors onboard. none of them as far as I know have ever gotten into trouble, or blacklisted. Even if someone did get blacklisted in some way, it'll be illegal and unconstitutional. It's supposedly a free country.
