the Coltranes, Pt. III - Ravi

I got to know about Ravi Coltrane (1965 - ) in the late 1990s, when his debut album as a bandleader, Moving Pictures, dropped. For much of his career, he was a reliable sideman, like his younger brother, Oran. In 1998, he came into his own with Moving Pictures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feRxtVs723w

Ravi Coltrane established himself as neither as radical as his father's later work, nor as conservative as some other young hard boppers in the '90s. As a young man, while living in L.A., he took an interest in photography and filmmaking, but switched to the study of music, following the death of his older brother, John Jr., in a vehicular accident. Since establishing himself, Ravi has taken on a role similar to that of J. R. R. Tolkien's dutiful son, Christopher. Ravi Coltrane is the chairman of The Coltrane Home, an organization preserving his father's legend and legacy.

Moving Pictures makes a good reference for a film noir. His cover of Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge" would be great music for a chase scene. The track preceding it, "High Windows" is both mournful and seductive, like a private eye spotting a femme fatale at a funeral they're both attending.

I just started listening to his second album, From the Round Box, and the opening track also has a great "hard-boiled" vibe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDp6V18eDcQ

Since Ravi Coltrane is still alive and active, I do hope a filmmaker reaches out to him to score a movie--and gets him going on the music during pre-production.

PS: I just finished listening to the entirety of Ravi Coltrane's 2nd album, From the Round Box. That album on its own would make a great soundtrack for a hard-boiled, film noir thriller.
