Filmmaking / Directing : All advise welcome! by Rose Cardoza

All advise welcome!

I posted a question about camera brands and types in the cinematography lounge. I received a lot of great advice which is most appreciated. My project theme is domestic violence. I do not have a great deal of experience in film making or directing, and one of the responses was "if you don't even know what camera to choose, you shouldn't be the one shooting the movie!" I thought about it and I agree. I need to produce and shoot a powerful, emotional 3 minute trailer which I would like to complete with excellent quality as professionally as possible. I am seeking a crew and advice on how to get this done with a goal of completion by mid December.

D Marcus

One of the wonderful things about making a movie is working with talented people. One thing about crew people is they tend to not want to travel far when working for little (or no) money. So when seeking a crew you could mention where you will be making your movie. Post a notice with the following information; where you will be shooting, when you will be shooting, how many day you will be shooting and if you are paying.

JD Hartman

Maybe the reality of the situation is that with little or no experience in any role, you need a complete crew from Producer, Director on down to P.A. You've created the story or project and need the completed work to be faithful to your vision, but need to take a back seat to its actual creation. Is your script a documentary style piece or a semi-factual dramatic recreation, or?

Hello, Thank you all for the great advice, always very much appreciated. I completely agree and therefore would like the experts to do their respective jobs in the production process with my input so my vision is accurately portrayed. I don't yet have the specific shooting location (I am hoping for the New York area) I am able to travel anywhere there is a crew who is willing to assist with this project.

Parker Reeve

From the perspective of a crew member I agree with D. In order for me to consider assisting you on this project I would need specific information. If you are not paying and shooting in the New York area I can't assist. If you are paying and shooting in the New York area I can assist. If you decide to travel to Los Angeles and make the movie there and are not paying I can assist. But I would also need to know when before I can offer any assistance. Many crew members work project to project. When you decide where and when and how much please let me know. I would love to assist with this project.

Rose, are you directing? Do you have a budget? Do you have some kind of outline or script ready? Are you traveling where the crew is or are you planning to move the crew to your location?

Rose Cardoza

I can and will travel anywhere to the crew mainly because it is non paying and will work around the crew's schedule, with hopes of completion by end of December if possible. As far as directing, it is my vision so I will be involve along side a more experience director. The shoot is mostly interior, except for 1 scene, the story is based on 4 abused women of different ethnicity.

D Marcus

There are many capable crew in the NY area. You can stay at home. Do you have a finished script? Do you have a budget? How many days will the shoot take?

Rose Cardoza

I know there are many capable crews in the NY area, buy because its not a paid project other than meals etc. I will travel if I have to.

JD Hartman

What kind of project is this and where is it going? It it a teaser to be used to get funding?

D Marcus

Do you have a finished script? Do you have a budget? How many days will you shoot?

Rose Cardoza

Yes, , but I am only doing the trailer which will take no more than a day, max 2, its just a 3 minute trailer

Parker Reeve

I can donate a day or two. Let me know when you decide if you are shooting in NY or if you will be traveling. And where you decide you will travel to. And when you will be shooting the trailer.

JD Hartman

You're shooting a trailer and obviously this is a project you hope to go further with "professional" funding and sell, but what are you offering prospective crew? Guaranteed spots on the crew of the full length version, deferred pay contract., ....? Have you read this? https://www.stage32.com/lounge/crew/Tips-For-Hiring-Unpaid-Crew-Members

Rose Cardoza

Will do, thank you.

Rose Cardoza

Guaranteed spots on the crew of the full length version, deferred pay contract on the full length production and that is only if I don't have full financing. Thank you for the info. as well.
