Getting The Script From The Film Director

Getting the script from the film director. In this case, it was the film Classic, written and directed by Michelle Hoffman. Here are two of the storyboards I did for the film. A long shot to a close up/medium shot. Exterior shot to an exterior/interior shot.

I get a script and visualize the scenes. Always change up the angles when transitioning the shots. When reading a page from the script, it gives me an idea of what each scene will look like. When I finish up the storyboards, I email them back to the director with notes, describing each scene. It’s important to always keep communication lines open with the director to make sure that everything is on point and that the job is a collaborative and creative process. Have a great day, everyone!

Thank you, everyone.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Rich Terdoslavich. How did you come up with the timing for the storyboards?

Rich Terdoslavich

Hi, Maurice. I’m thinking that for each scene, you would cut to the next after a few seconds.

Ok, gotcha, Rich Terdoslavich. Thank you.

@Rich Cool work! Your B&W sketches are my favourite story board type, preferring uniqueness & verisimilitude over heavy visuals via apps or graphics. Key emotional, plot, or action beats in a scene can have more impact when executed by hand.. I collect 60’s/70’s & other old school style storyboards. One below is from Taxi Driver.

No sweat, Maurice. A lot of boards I see would have that time duration. I would read a script, thinking how long would each scene last, thinking in terms of beats, pauses etc.

Thank you, Debbie! Thank you for your positive comments. That’s awesome that you collect b&w storyboards. You have boards form Taxi Driver? I know that Scorsese draws his boards. I like Ridley Scott’s boards, called Ridleygrams.

Just watched Taxi Driver again. Great film. Have seen Scorsese’s boards to Raging Bull which are amazing. Also, Hitchcock’s boards to Vertigo. Welles’ boards to Citizen Kane are great to look at too. Inspiring work.

There is a doc about storyboard artists, cinematographers, production designers etc. Don’t know the name of it, but if I find out, will pass the info to you.

Again, thank you for liking my work and talk to you soon! All the best.
