I am a screenwriter in NYC. I want to Direct my own work. Can anyone suggest a good book on "How to Direct"?

I want to follow the Woody Allen model of film making and have control over my own stories that I write. I do not want to make the same "What's New Pussycat "? mistake that he mentioned in his documentary (which is great and on Netflix now) And as always a special shout out to my fellow members of Stage 32 in the New York City. This is a coast too, Man!!

This book will give you step-by-step guidelines on how to direct, along with giving you an understanding of film language.

Jeremy- Thank you very much. I will let you know how it helped. Best wishes for your upcoming projects.

No problem. Best wishes to you on your filmmaking journey.

I'm a writer-producer, not a writer-director, so take my comments in that context. Books are great for ideas and don't cost much money, but I'd say your best bet (perhaps after a reading a bit) is simply to start. (You may have thought of these. If so, comments withdrawn.) If your script(s) require a big budget which you can't afford, do a staged reading(s). Perhaps buy your participants a nice meal afterward as thank you gesture. You're in NYC so you undoubtedly can find actors who are hungry for experience. Or find a DP and do a short film or whatever you need to do to get going. But in summary, personally I learned a hell of lot more, for not much money, from doing than from reading about it.

Douglas- Thank you for your advice. You are right there is no substitute for experience. And I am with you."Just do it" I have the actors cast. I have some crew. I am talking to several New York Based DP's that I am connecting with through Stage 32. However, I am going to do what Woody Allen did after the "Whats New Pussycat" fiasco, and read a book on "How to Direct". I want to jump in with at least some fundamental knowledge. I don't know if I mentioned this but I am still costing all this out for investors. I do have the hardest job on my journey ahead of me. Need someone to "SHOW ME THE MONEY" (sorry Tom). Anyway I also am exploring grants for the doc film which will be a micro budget. And setting up a film co- op where we all pool out talents and sign legal document stating CLEARLY how we will get paid when we get distribution fees. Still a long road but I am enjoying the journey. What else am I going to do? Be a telemarketer? Yeech!!! Thanks.

Douglas Eugene Mayfield

Steven. You're absolutely right. 'Death before telemarketing.' :)

Steven Harris Anzelowitz

Douglas- I wouldn't go as far as death, But writing is the most fun I have with my clothes on. And Directing looking forward to that also. Although I think the cast and crew would not appreciate me showing up in my birthday suit.
