Filmmaking / Directing : It's alive! by Sam Sokolow

It's alive!

There is a sudden resurgance of Frankenstein movies. I've always loved the book and enjoyed almost every attempt, from Boris Karloff to Robert DeNiro. What are your thoughts on Frankenstein staying alive? https://variety.com/2025/film/news/why-frankenstein-movies-coming-out-12...

I'm excited, Sam Sokolow! And not just for the Frankenstein movies. All of the classic monsters. I like seeing different takes on the monsters!

@All I enjoy all monster film originals, many were made 1950s/60’ by Hammer Films UK. Been so many re makes internationally by various studios but ones that stand out have great acting & plot. VFX or polystyrene glued to plywood props its characters journey we remember.

Frankenstein is one of those rare stories that never really dies because it taps into so many timeless themes: the fear of the unknown, the consequences of playing god, the search for identity, and the tragedy of isolation. Every generation finds a new angle to explore, which is why it keeps coming back with fresh relevance. I’m really intrigued to see how these new takes lean into the emotional and ethical questions the story poses. Thanks for sharing the article, Sam Sokolow!

I love Frankenstein!

They are pushing the Christian Bale Franky film back to next year though. Yet, I am a Big Frankenstein Fan as well!

This kind of reminds me of when March of the Penguins, Happy Feet, and Surf's Up all came out at the same time. Penguins were just "in the air" I guess!

Rick Rubin talks about that in his book "The Creative Act". Sometimes it's just "time" for an idea. Maybe now is time for Frankenstein!

E Langley

Maybe it befits the zeitgeist that a hulking and essentially brainless monster threatens the village. Frankenstein's Monster is a projection of these fears.

Jan Yager

Because Frankenstein was originally written by Mary Shelley and women authors are in demand? Or possibly because of the idea of transformation and metamorphosis? Or maybe how much we are all in fear of, and in awe of, AI and how it will change the way we work or even rewire our brains?
