Stage 32 is so excited to announce that we are thrilled to partner with the 1st Assistant Director, Sarah Lucas, from NETFLIX'S ADOLESCENCE! In this webinar, you’ll explore how the AD team for ADOLESCENCE was structured, the overall filming process—from pre-production prep to executing those seamless oners on set—and a deep dive into the case study of Episode 2, one of the most challenging yet rewarding episodes of the series. We’ll cover everything from defining each AD role, maximizing rehearsals, and overcoming obstacles, to breaking down the script and managing cast journeys for those single-take shots. By the end, you’ll walk away with practical tips, insider strategies, and a clear understanding of how to innovate as a creative collaborator in film and TV—plus, you’ll get to join a Q&A with Sarah herself!
Let us introduce you to our incredible instructor, Sarah Lucas, the First Assistant Director behind ADOLESCENCE. Sarah’s career is nothing short of inspiring—she’s worked on everything from shiny floor entertainment shows to high-end TV, starting in the locations department on BBC’s DOCTORS before climbing the AD ladder from 3rd AD to 2nd AD, and now shining as a 1st AD. Her work on ADOLESCENCE was a dream come true, not just for the hard-hitting storyline, but for the challenge of shooting in a one-shot format, which she describes as an out-of-this-world experience. Sarah’s expertise doesn’t stop there—she’s currently working on the Hollywood feature ENOLA HOLMES 3, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Louis Partridge. With her wealth of experience and passion for innovative filmmaking, Sarah is the perfect guide to show you how the AD team brings a vision to life.

Very excited for this! Adolescence pulled off the incredible—each episode was filmed as one continuous shot, yet it never called attention to itself. It served the pacing and story rather than overshadowing it. If we’d noticed the technique while watching, it wouldn’t have been as effective. Can’t wait to hear all the behind-the-scenes details from planning to execution!

Absolutely, Joshua Young, well said! Adolescence is such a masterclass in restraint and precision. I can’t wait to hear how Sarah Lucas and the AD team managed to coordinate that kind of invisible choreography on such a large scale. It’s going to be such an inspiring deep dive for any filmmaker or storyteller.

I'm so new to all of this, I am practicing the two ears, one mouth process...listen, listen, and then listen some more.! However, I will venture to say that, as a consumer, I was totally captivated by the main actors believability. I watched it three times so far. Once before this webinar became available, and twice since.

Hi, Sarah. Thanks for taking the time to host this webinar and answer our questions! Thanks for putting this webinar together and offering it for free, Stage 32! Thanks for moderating, Annisa! My question to Sarah is what was the first step in figuring out how ADOLESCENCE was going to be shot?

Second question for Sarah: What steps did the cast and crew take to make sure things didn't go wrong while filming the one-shot for an episode?

My questions for Sarah and you can choose one: 1) Were there any unexpected moments that made a take even better than planned? 2) How do you balance the demands of logistics with the creative vision of the director?

Thx for showing this to a new beginner that wrote books for a script later to come. If you are interested. Why me? A stolen childhood, Why is this happening to me? Love and Disconnections. I am writing in both Swedish, English and will also translate my fairytales to Spanish, I am illustrating all my books and my son with autism made twelve fairytales with me in a different genre than the books recommended you to check.
