What One Must Do in the Face of Distribution

I’ve talked about distribution and the many independent avenues creatives use to showcase their work. Distributing your work can often be a struggle, and on an independent level, breaking through can be tough.

Take comedian Joe List, for example. He felt the same way about his comedy special, Small Ball. Knowing his options, and his history of posting work on YouTube, Joe wanted to create a unique experience and a direct way to distribute his special. The result? His comedy special was screened in theaters... for one night... while also being available on YouTube.

To many, that might sound unusual. These days, most comedy specials are picked up by streaming platforms, and before the rise of streaming, networks like HBO and Comedy Central regularly featured them in their programming.

Joe joked with Deadline, saying he’s “the least successful comedian to have a comedy special in a movie theater.” But his decision seems rooted in something deeper: a dissatisfaction with the traditional “watching an audience watch comedy” format.

I bring this up to say that even at the independent level, there are still ways to bring your work to life.

Great share, Sam Rivera! Joe List’s approach may seem unconventional, but it’s exactly the kind of outside-the-box thinking that often cuts through the noise in today’s crowded content landscape.

Screening a comedy special in a theater and making it available on YouTube might not follow the traditional model, but it aligns perfectly with how audiences actually consume content now, seeking immediacy, accessibility, and a sense of community around an event.

For indie filmmakers and creatives, this is a powerful reminder that distribution isn’t one-size-fits-all. Sometimes the most memorable launches come from rethinking what distribution even means for your audience.
