Films About Famous Art and Artists - KENNY SCHARF: WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE and the online Zoom Q&A for him.

I have the opportunity to promote a film so I thought you would want to see how a press release works. We pay attention to the who, what, when, where and how but also to the why. I have a long association with the LA Jewish Film Festival and have acted as the festival publicist for 14 years. What's different is Zoom. We now bring audiences into our online events from all over the world. Yes, being in a real theater is always fun, but, now that Covid has taken over the other distribution route, we should all find a good reason to be in this together and be glad you can stay out of LA traffic to see this terrific documentary about Kenny Scharf and the whole street art explosion that he helped create. Enjoy:

'When Worlds Collide' is about Kenny Scharf’s particular do-it-yourself, high-tone, technicolor artistic vision and was filmed over 11 years by his daughter Malia Scharf and co-director, Max Basch. The filmmaking team captures testimonials mixed with rare archival footage of Scharf and other icons of pop art, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring. Interviews with Ed Ruscha, Dennis Hopper, Yoko Ono and others make this a must watch film for anyone who has heard of the street graffiti artist Bansky and wants to know more about the history behind street art and pop culture.

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, Kenny Scharf's quintessential Jewish family placed importance on tradition and middle class values. His parents supported his interest in art from a young age, taking him to visit museums and galleries.

When Scharf arrived in New York City in the early 1980s, he quickly befriended Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. This trio, amongst the fervent creative bustle of a depressed downtown scene, would soon take the art world by storm. While Basquiat and Haring both died tragically young, Scharf lived through cataclysmic shifts in the East Village as well as the ravages of AIDS and economic depression.

'When Worlds Collide' is a film about the art of fun, about living life out loud, despite setbacks, and about Kenny Scharf’s particular do-it-yourself, high-tone, technicolor artistic vision. Scharf currently lives in the Culver City area of Los Angeles where his acclaimed and recent exhibitions include the Hammer Museum, MOCA, Pasadena Art Museum and others. You can see his murals in West Hollywood and citywide in Los Angeles. He is currently working with Dior on an exclusive line of apparel.

This event is presented in cooperation with the City of West Hollywood, Nassau County Museum of Art, the Oakwood School, LA and TOTAH Gallery.

About Dior and Kenny Scharf’s Influence in Fashion:

Poised between utopianism and cosmic travel, Dior's petites mains collection is influenced by Kenny Scharf’s* hypnotic work. Designs by Kim Jones are distinctive for their luminous vitality, they are a symbol of pure joie de vivre. The American artist’s paintings – such as Viva Mare Viva Mar, When the Worlds Collide and Globo Mundo – are transposed onto precious brocade, Chinese seed-stitch embroidery, or prints combined with fringe or metallic threads, creating statement pieces and dazzling total looks. Such technical feats attest to the excellence of Dior's petites mains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGmaT6RGg_s
