One of the many reasons filmmakers choose their calling is the dream of seeing their name in the bright lights of a theatrical premiere. With streaming and the ever-changing market place that is becoming less and less common place. You may have the greatest film in the world, but with the physical market wiped out and the digital market booming – very few companies are interested in pursuing theatrical. How does one go about theatrical in this day and age? Surely you can’t just walk up to a theatre and talk to them about your film? The answers may be easier than you think.
Many filmmakers walk into a market, festival or distributor saying the same thing – they want a huge minimum guarantee, a wide theatrical and a lucrative streaming deal. The reality is that distribution and film sales are a lot more nuanced than a couple brass rings everyone talks about as if they were the only options out there. Modern filmmaking requires being more resourceful, using grassroots tactics, and creating a campaign that captures the imagination in a crowded marketplace. Film school frequently teaches one how to make a picture, not how to navigate the business world. But in the 21st century there are self distribution options and a slew of new ways to bring your story to the world – and make money while you do it!
