Distribution : Who's using Cinando for the AFM? by Christopher McDonell

Who's using Cinando for the AFM?

Last year I went through the catalogue and booked my appointments by email. This year it appears I've automatically been signed up to Cinando which is causing me nothing but headaches for the moment. I can't update my profile because everything I click leads to 404 Page Not Found errors. This is day 2 of me writing customer support which takes 24 hrs for a reply. So it worth resolving??

Cinando is just another list of filmakers and companies that are going to AFM. And that list is too big to navigate.. Personally I don't use it.

Cinando is Cannes Film Festival's directory, which has a partnership with AFM. It's a great resource for contacts, but I don't know many people who use it for meetings.

I've been using a combination of Cinando and the Film Catalogue to set up meetings. Sometimes a company that is listed on the Film Catalogue is also listed on Cinando, but with more contact options. Also, when you get closer to market time, Cinando tells you which companies and staff will actually be there, which is helpful.

Are you using the app or the website? Personally, I find the site to be less cumbersome.

Now that I signed up and added media etc. to Cinando, I find I haven't used it at all. I've been using the Film Catalogue and sending email old school. You're right, the mobile app is cumbersome. Plus, the coding needs fixed. The text overlays the graphics.

I'll probably double-check the companies I hope to meet on Cinando starting this week and make sure I've got everyone!

Amber MacPherson

I've contacted almost everyone via e-mail, too. Occassionally I find an e-mail listed on Cinando that's not on the FIlm Catalogue, which is when I've found it most useful.

Good luck with your meetings! Have a great AFM!

I wish there was an easy way to sort companies or sales agents who distribute documentaries. A “documentary” search in films brings up 300+ companies with docs in their catalogue (on the AFM site). So I’ve been cross-referencing that way... But I’ve already discovered suitable distributors who fell through the cracks. Same with Cinando. You can just sort AFM distributors by country or name. And the list is long! How does one best maximize these resources to target the right people?

Amber MacPherson

Yeah, I feel this problem. I also find mysef digging for genre. Sometimes that even means going through company websites since some don't list their preferences on the Film Cat or Cinando. It's frustrating and I too wish there were an easier way to sort for this kind of thing.

My last visit to AFM, I used Film Catalogue, plus cross referenced with company websites looking for comps. Set up several meetings by email. Once I had the print catalog at the event, I went through it page by page looking at sales agents’ releases to compile a list of folks to drop in on. I think I made some last minute appointments that way too. I found the catalog was the best way to browse. The ads clued me in to high profile companies too.

Cinando is a great tool for film festival prep. The main one its helpful for is Cannes as membership comes with accreditation.
