Hi All! I’m Missy, a newbie to the world of screenwriting and entertainment, excited and grateful to connect and learn. I did my formal screenwriting training 20+ years ago in Los Angeles. A few lifetimes later, I’m now a public health professor and mental health therapist serving and celebrating rural LGBTQ+ communities in North Carolina.
Along the way, my love for storytelling never faltered, and I’m more passionate than ever about its unique power. My writing intertwines metaphor with research with the hope of translating knowledge from public health & mental health into myth and fantasy to offer authentic connection and healing.
I am very open and would VERY much appreciate recommendations and insight on charting a course. I’m currently focusing on learning, working through revisions based on coverage, and strengthening my writing community. Thank you!

Oh my goodness, Maurice Vaughan ! Yes, I know ECU well. That's where I did my doctorate. Small world!
Definitely a small world, Melissa Stancil! I took my SAT at ECU. How many scripts have you written?

Melissa Stancil, welcome to the wonderful world of Stage 32 where the coffee is usually fresh and the donuts are not too bad. This former North Carolina resident sends greetings and best wishes from Germany.

Thanks, Wyman Brent. Best wishes from NC to you in Germany. Thanks for saying hello!
Thanks, Maurice Vaughan. I'm new new, just two. I have one polished script and one draft script. Somewhere there's a few half-finished ones from 20 years ago, but I lived several other dreams before coming back to this one.
You're welcome, Melissa Stancil. I have some half-finished scripts too. What's your plan for your scripts? Pitch them, enter contests, make them yourself, etc.

Thanks, Maurice Vaughan. It would be a dream to make them myself, but I'm still figuring out screenwriting, so we'll see. I've entered the finished script into 2 contests. No placements, but trying to get out there a bit. I'm currently learning about pitching and have started a pitch deck. When I get these emails about all these wonderful opportunities through Stage 32 for pitching, etc., I wonder, "when would I be ready for that?" Is there a rule of thumb or industry expectation. Like, once you've received a double recommend during coverage or placed in a contest?

You're welcome, Melissa Stancil. Getting a double recommend during coverage or placing in a contest are great! One of those things could mean something to one producer, director, executive, manager, etc., but not much to another producer, director, etc.
Here are some pitching resources that can help you get ready:
The Pitch Practice is the best pitching resource in my opinion. Pitch Practice is every Thursday night at 5:30 P.M. PST/8:30 P.M. EST. You can sit in and listen to members practice their projects and give them feedback. You can pitch your project too, but you have to sign up. The hosts, Noel Thompson and John Mezes, take names during Pitch Practice for people to pitch the following week. You have to sit in and listen at the practice one or two times before you can pitch. The Pitch Practices are only open to Writers' Room members.
The Pitch Tank in the Writers' Room is an incredible pitching resource too. The Pitch Tank is where you pitch your script to an executive and get feedback. I think the Pitch Tank is every week in the Writers’ Room.
And here’s a free pitch webinar I suggest checking out: www.stage32.com/education/products/pitching-tips-from-the-pros-your-blue...
