Exhaustive Creative Energy

Have you been so alive in writing a book or script that you fell asleep on your keyboard? Share your story - we all have one...

Kat Spencer

Debbie Seagle To my recollection, I have never fallen asleep on my keyboard. But then, I am a night owl. And I create at my best at night.

Debbie Seagle

LOL Obviously I need to run from my keyboard after midnight. It's good to know that no one else makes up stories until they pass out. : )

Wyman Brent

Debbie Seagle, I did make up stories until I passed out. However, that involved a bottle of whiskey and an annoyed girlfriend.

Debbie Seagle

Wyman - You're the man! I love a story that keeps us imagining what happened next.

Wyman Brent

Debbie Seagle, thanks. Everyone tells me that I am full of wit. At least, I think they said wit.

Hahaha, Debbie Seagle, I did this a LOT in college.

There was a semester during my junior year when I was an RA in the dorms and had to be “on duty” every Wednesday night. That meant walking the halls every few hours, responding to noise complaints or emergencies, and staying alert in case anything went sideways. The catch? My heaviest workload class was on Thursday mornings, TV Development, where I had to create an entire original series, including a series bible, pilot script draft, and a production budget for the pilot by the end of the semester.

So most weeks, I just didn’t sleep on Wednesdays. I’d stay up all night bouncing between writing and RA responsibilities, then drag myself to class Thursday morning, where we also had to do elevator pitches at the top of each session based on a news story we’d researched. I cannot tell you how many times I nodded off at my desk while writing that semester. On Thursday afternoons, I would crash hard.

That blend of exhaustion and creative momentum is so real, and weirdly addictive when you’re in it.

More times than I can count. Client work occupies my days, so nights are often the times when I can dive into my own stuff, leading to many adventurezzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Jonathan Jordan

Ashley Renee Smith I don't believe it. You're far too cool to have been an RA.

Debbie Seagle

Ashley Renee Smith I am not surprised that you were that dedicated. I've seen some of insights you share - and you're everywhere! I agree - "That blend of exhaustion and creative momentum is so real, and weirdly addictive when you’re in it."

Maria Baltazzi

I have fallen asleep at my keyboard, though not while writing. I usually get up in the morning to write.

Jonathan Jordan the allure of free housing at a private arts college was just too strong. Plus, I was unsurprisingly a pretty natural floor mom. lol!

I have stared and edited and tweaked a page or line to no avail for hours. Then I want to sleep out of exhaustion, so I lay down, close my eyes... and BOOM! There's the fix I was looking for.
