A Game Changer in Middle Grade Fiction – Meet Hatman!
I just have to share this incredible new Australian release - Hatman by Adam Wallace - because I honestly believe it’s a game-changer for the publishing and storytelling world.
What starts as a regular middle grade chapter book suddenly transforms - by Chapter 4 - into a graphic novel with a soundtrack!
Yes, you read that right. Hatman blends storytelling, art, music, and tech into one interactive experience:
* The cover is designed like a movie poster
* Readers scan QR codes to unlock music and graphics
* Local musicians, animators, and graphic artists were all part of the creative team
The result? A fully immersive reading experience that bridges the gap between books and multimedia storytelling.
The book launch? Not just a regular library visit. Adam turned it into a massive concert. Having the musicians perform, have the illustrator show their art and, of course, Adam there to tell snippets of the story. That's not a book launch - that's a rock star experience! ...he also had almost 200 people attend this launch. That's decent numbers if you ask me!
As a writer, I find this concept so exciting - it opens up new opportunities for collaboration between authors, illustrators, musicians, and even IT creatives. Who would have thought books could now come with a soundtrack and animated scenes?
This could be a glimpse into the future of publishing - and I’m all for it. More collaboration. More opportunities. More game changing ideas coming to life.
Check out Adam Wallace and Hatman - I think he’s just redefined what a chapter book can be.
What do you think? Could this kind of hybrid storytelling change how we write (or produce) stories for younger and older readers?

Hi! I think this is an expensive and risky project. I doubt that other authors will repeat it.

Arthur Charpentier I'm curious to see where it all goes... thanks for letting me know your thoughts!

I love it! When you think about it, it's a lot like producing a movie script. I recently found an incredible composer who read my script & - on a zoom call - he played me tunes he's written that tell the story - in a way I couldn't.
When I was writing my first book, I created a playlist that corresponded to every chapter. I wish I'd been innovative enough to know what to do with it - like Adam Wallace and Hatman did!
Thank you for sharing this Lauren Hackney . I haven't heard about anything like this before, and you may be right - "... a glimpse into the future of publishing ...More collaboration. More opportunities. More game changing ideas coming to life."

Oh no! Lauren Hackney I wrote a long, (exciting, thought-provoking, insightful) ha ha response that said how much I love this idea.... Where did it go?
I forgot to hit the red arrow --->
Dang. I really wanted to share my thoughts on how brilliant this is.
It's a lot like creating a film. I found a composer who read my script & wrote the music that told my entire story in a way I never could. It was an incredible zoom call that brought me to tears.
I also made a playlist for each chapter in my book (I heard the songs in my head as I was writing)... just wish I'd been as innovative as Adam Wallace!
I agree with you "More collaboration. More opportunities. More game changing ideas coming to life."
Thank YOU for sharing this with us.
