Writing Samples - Where Do I Begin?

Hello fellow Author's,

I have a small publishing house inquiring about writing samples, and I need some insight as to:

* How long is a writing sample (pages?; paragraphs?; chapters?)

* What is the best material from ones book(s)/novels(s) as said samples (first 10-pages like in screenwriting?)

* Where do begin? Where do I end? (Should I cliff-hang the publisher's reader, leave them wanting more?)

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Check out the company website and see if they have guidelines as to what they consider acceptable for a writing sample. 10,000 words tends to be the norm, and it's the first 10,000 they'll be most interested in I'd warrant.

Thank you, David.

Jeff:

Oddly there weren't/aren't, but I know a writer already with them and she clued me in to the requirements. Since then I have submitted some material.
