This morning, I learned that my feature drama script, Tabitha Drowning, made it to the quarterfinals of PAGE screenwriting competition. Very thrilling and humbling as I have been only writing for a year since graduating from UCLA's Professional screenwriting program, and this is my first script. Am trying to make progress on the second one right now...it is in the horror vein...why is the second so much harder than the first?!
That is a good question! Congrats on it being made into the quarterfinals!

Congrats. This is what I call the “Second Album” issue. Many bands have a great first album and the second one isn’t as good.
The reason is that the songs on the first album have been around for ages. Played in bars and clubs for years.. The second album is written to order.
Your first screenplay has probably been lurking in your brain forever. Your second screenplay takes so much more effort because you have to push all that brain lurking into a small period of time.
Your biggest issue is not realising the free work your brain did on the first screenplay. It dragged all your life experience in and onto the page. That will never happen again. You have developed your skills. Your have found your voice. You have a process. This is as good as it gets. You are now a writer and no longer a tourist (I have a great idea - tourist). Everyone’s first script is like a gateway drug that addicts us to the creation of visual story telling.
I know I am a strange person. But the struggle is what I love.
Thanks guys. Craig, what a fantastic reply. You nailed it!
Congratulations.
