Agencies in Chicago

Hi folks, anyone here have some experience with Chicago-land agencies? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Danny Manus

Honestly, don't bother. If the agent is not in LA or NY, people in Hollywood don't really take them seriously.

Thanks Danny, I though so too, but I'm glad to hear from you.

It probably depends on what you are doing, though. If you are modelling, and know you're not cut out for high fashion modelling, a local agency might be a good connection. Local advertisers working on a budget will cast local talent through agents. Don't expect to get rich, famous -- or even discovered -- this way. It's simply a fun way to get occasional work. You will not get film work through local agencies. Any that come your way will be non-paid. For break-in acting roles, connecting through groups like Stage32 is by far the best way to go. If you are serious, however, about entering the acting or modelling profession, I think Danny is right. Look to the major agencies. You will need a portfolio or reel of work, though. They don't waste their time on talent that is not "marketable." A fan base and credits are helpful, and a significant roll in a famous or profitable movie helps tremendously. It's back to the "who you know" deal, so cultivate those connections. ;) And the BIGGEST thing to remember is DON'T SPEND MONEY AT AN AGENCY. Their job is to GET you work that pays. If YOU have to pay THEM, they are not really working for you. Some "agencies" try to rope you into acting or modelling classes, photo shoots, competitions, etc. Those agencies are only earning money off your dreams. Real agencies earn money off the work they get for you. If you talk to any agent or scout, and the conversation turns in some way to how much their representation will cost you, it's a good time to walk away. :)

Stacey, thank you for the great advice!
