I would suggest that like everything in Life, change is important and necessary. Simply look at the plummeting ticket sales and move to digital platforms that have the opportunity to shift audience from spectator to participant. I would follow Mike Jones (mikejones.tv) and take into consideration his views. You're not pigeon holed as a screenwriter but instead a creative storyteller. The choice is yours

What the writer in that article says would be true if Hollywood were the only place where movies are made. That guy needs to broaden his horizons. There is a wealth of wonderful scripts and films out there that far surpass Hollywood in both quality and quantity. Hollywood is just more successful.

It does seem that writers get a lot more attention (sometimes love and respect!?) when they are writing for television and need to be in there on a weekly basis to keep a series going. (Vince Gilligan was certainly adored for writing "Breaking Bad".) Maybe on movie sets, the script is just considered a starting point, and the director can take his/her vision wherever the wind is blowing. I know I aspire to write for television, not movies. In terms of directors who take credit for writing, well if I felt I had the skills to direct, I would definitely write AND direct my own stuff--that's the only way to ensure your vision. But maybe there are not that many people who can really pull that off and be excellent at both? But screenwriters need to get more credit. I was reading a Wikipedia article on a mini-series, and it actually listed the music composer but not the writer(s)! That is just ridiculous. Maybe we don't need people at awards speeches thanking the writers as much as we need to be able to see on Wikipedia, Netflix, and other computer sites the names of the people that wrote the shows and movies we find excellent! How wonderful it would be to click on that link and see what else they have written!!!!
