Brand Wars

A little help Please. Looking for an Iconic brand war; Coke and Pepsi, but in the spread (on Bread) department. Downunder we have Vegemite vrs Marmite. I haven't been to America as yet and Google want give me the answer I'm looking for. Thanx in Advance

Gordon Milburn

@ Stuart, Peanut butter's fine, can you give an eg of a couple of brands favored over each other. @ Alle. In NZ we have both and it can get a little heated when discussing which is the better. Scene setup: 18 yr old male forced to go shopping with his mother, cannot find his favorite brand of spread. Looses it! For greater impact on the audience I am looking for two iconic brands, hence the comparison of Coke and Pepsi. Thanx to you both

!#&*! I luv Storytelling. See above post, see what I now know. Thanx Sam http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2009/02/why_do...

Mississippi?!!! this is why Brits shouldn't write Yank... they have no idea how insignificant some things are. Here's you go: Jif vs Peter Pan - peanut butter Hellmans vs Just Mayo vs Miracle Whip -- mayonnaise Smuckers vs Welch's -- jelly/jam butter vs I can't believe it's not butter margarine

Gordon Milburn

Bugger. I liked the idea of, M, I, double S, I, Double S, I, Double P, I. (Just some Offshore flavour, perspective) lol Unfortunately Peter Pan brand was an Ice Cream brand when I was growing up, (relevance, Global Audience Appeal, understanding). Lisa the Planters peanut man is known globally, or at least I recognise him, could I replace M/Belle with that legitimately? Thanx Stuart, the info has been great.

Lisa Scott

Oh stop getting you knickers in a twist. I don't pretend to write Brit.

Lisa Scott

Gordon -- i don't understand why it's "unfortunate" that it's a global brand. It's still very American if that's what you need. M/Belle -- never heard of it... so much that it would NOT work as something recognized.

J Medina

Wonder Bread is a big company here in the USA.

Oliver White

I've mentioned before that Americans tend to say British when they mean English. You can be a citizen of Great Britain but British is not a nationality nor is there a British accent. So if Yanks are planning to write Brit, it would be a good idea to remember this.

Lisa Scott

yeah, Sam. humor is lost on you. bread is not a spread.

Lisa Scott

so you like the unfunny humor?

Jean-Pierre Chapoteau

"Wonder" is the only bread brand I think American's would recognize off hand. I googled "bread Brands" and I saw a lot of familiar packaging, but I had no idea that's what they were called. I buy "Nature's OWn religiously" but had no idea that's what it was called. As For Peantu Butter, I agree that Jif vs Peter Pan would be the best. I've never heard of Mississippi Peanut Butter.

J Medina

how about skippy vs. Jif peanut butter? lol

Lisa Scott

that's a good one.

Gordon Milburn

M/belle= mississippi belle. And the unfortunate is that, other audience members will be pulled from the rythm of the story by, eh? That's an ice cream not peanut butter. thank you to everyone for their input, sori for the trans Atlantic spat.

Rosa Lafantastica

If you want something newer, Jif has launched a chocolate nut spread now to compete with oldie Nutella: this is like the new kid on the block versus the established old guy. And with chocolate involved, there will be more passion in the story! :-)

Lisa Scott

it's easy to get brands into film production. they call it free advertising... and they'll send you actual product to use in the production and to enjoy at the craft services table.

Gordon Milburn

I've read the statistics for screenplays to movies per annum and I must say it's not encouraging, in fact why do I even bother. But should this story, ever see the light of day and become the next Da Vinci Code, spawned out of the recent Wall Street protests, encompassing religious politics. I'll say SORRY I bet you're wondering what the ×#*! A jar of peanut butter has to do with that. hahahahahaaa.

Gordon Milburn

Cool and thanx for the indepth on courier font(previous post), some people learn differently and i now embrace the font. As for my jar of peanut butter, it's being used to push a complex idea, in a very basic way and America and peanut butter, like "A Vegemite Sandwich " to an Aussie like yourself. Again thanx for the info

Lisa Scott

CJ -- the OP was specific about this being an American battle. if he had asked for something British I'm pretty sure I would leave it to the Brit experts who know Brit products.

J.T. Quinn

Wow this is a lot of writing for a simple answer. Butter vs Parkay was the first real spread war in the U.S.
