Improving your Screenwriting Craft

Hello All,

I recently finished my first screenplay and am currently editing it. When I'm not working on it I often read books on screenwriting and study screenplays from other movies.

I'm just curious, what other ways are there to improve your screenwriting craft?

Thanks,

T.A. Uner

I just started joining the writer's coverage group. I think giving and hearing critiques is a good way to sharpen skills as well.

Congratulations on finishing your first screenplay, Tuvan Uner! I second the Coverage Reports in Stage 32's Writers' Room. Also the Education and Blogs on here. And reading screenplays.

Listen to radio plays on archive.org - - Search for BBC Saturday Night Theatre, or Sixty Minute theater, or any plays by masters like Henrik Ibsen, like 'An Enemy of the People'. I listen to two every single day - as I do other things. I also watch a movie every day. - - or you can study structure by binge watching. The best way? Also write another, then another - keep going.

One thing that’s helped me a lot is getting outside feedback early and often -- script swaps, table reads, even just having someone summarize what they think the story is after reading.

Also rewriting with a specific focus each pass (only structure, only character, only dialogue) instead of trying to fix everything at once. It makes improvement more measurable.

Also congratulations on writting your script T.A. Uner

I have myself learned screenwriting by doing no-budget filming. Very efficient method. Others have learned by joining their local amateur theatre. Or by drawing comics. Or creating radio plays.

Ayesha Simra thank you for your response.

If I can give you a really good advice is... just share it. Find people who are interested in genres and recieve feedback, having someone else read it for you gives you a lot of clarity on what it's lacking sometimes.

Alex Olguin are there forums for folks who love Action/Adventure films? My only issue is someone plagiarizing my screenplay.
