Requesting guidance to convert my book into a screenplay

Just finished writing my novel: The Crucible Diaries: The Mentor's Favorite which is a psychological dystopian thriller that follows a teenage girl trapped inside a brutal academic regime, where survival depends on more than just scores.

Think Black Mirror meets Whiplash, set in a city that feels uncomfortably real.

This book has already garnered attention from two film studios one Indian and another International, who believe they'll be able to assess my story better if its converted into a screenplay format.

That's why now I'm looking for someone who can adapt this book into a screenplay and would love to connect with screenwriters, directors, or producers who resonate with stories about mental endurance, fractured systems, and complex female protagonists.

If you're into emotionally charged narratives, ethical dilemmas, or layered character arcs, let's talk. Would love to collaborate, learn, and build something powerful together.

DM's open!

Hi, Ishanee Bawankar. Welcome to the community. Congratulations on finishing your novel and garnering attention from two studios!

You could make a post on the Job Board for a screenwriter to adapt your novel (www.stage32.com/find-jobs).

Stage 32 has a blog that'll help you navigate the platform and connect with creatives and industry professionals all over the world (www.stage32.com/blog/how-to-successfully-navigate-the-stage-32-platform-...).

Stage 32 will be having its next live Community Open House on July 30th. It'll also help you navigate Stage 32 and connect with creatives and industry pros. There's going to be a live Q&A. You can sign up for free here: www.stage32.com/education/products/stage-32-july-community-open-house

I suggest using a photo of yourself as your profile picture. People will feel more comfortable networking and collaborating with you if they know what you look like. And if you have a picture, your profile will show up when someone searches for you. You can upload a picture by clicking the gear symbol in the top right-hand corner and selecting “Edit profile” in the drop-down menu, then clicking the red button underneath your location and choosing "Update profile picture."

I asked for an add, and can do this conversions quickly, and at a low cost. I have done this before. References available.

Jon Shallit

Sorry, typo. Conversion not conversions.

Ishanee Bawankar

Thank you so much, Maurice! I'll definitely check out all the links you've posted and will work on updating the profile picture too, really appreciate in pointing me in the right direction!

Sebastian Tudores

Welcome Ishanee Bawankar - and congrats on your book! As Maurice mentioned, definitely spend some time with the blog articles (especially those relevant to adaptations of novel-to-script and to producing) to get a better grounding of that process and to be able to converse productively with any potential collaborators. Excited for your journey and good luck! :)

Göran Johansson

With my background i filming, I advice you to write the screenplay in such a way that you minimize the amount of money needed to film it.

Ishanee Bawankar

Thank you so much, Sebastian! Yes I'm definitely reviewing the blog articles and I really appreciate the encouragement as I take these first steps into screenwriting!

Ishanee Bawankar

Thank you, Mr. Johansson! That's an incredibly useful point, I hadn't thought about the production cost impact while writing. I'll definitely keep that point in mind while writing my future novels. Appreciate the practical insight!

salve ishanee ! cheers from Rio !

to expand / adapt your book to a screenplay there are many circunstances that will make the effort useless. to start in the creative aspect of the screenplaywriting, I reccomend you choose a very peculiar scene of the story - perhaps a hook scene - to write and produce a very short movie video (maximun 3 min). that will spark a start in the production aspect: learn about camera lenses, set creation, actors casting... and most important audience reaction. at least you'll understand more about the process for the next moment you'll attract a producer, a famous actor and actress and more energies like money... do not go directly to a production company because now you do not understand the realities of the viability and monetization,

and also now no one will have a correct estimate of the range of your book.

Personally It is not clear if there is a happy ending, if this is a storic piece or if your story is focused on achieving awareness = which are choices about dimensions and directions that might make your great book into a great movie.

I do work as screenplaywriting consultant with focus on emotional narrative

based in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

Hi Ishanee Bawankar - very nice to meet you. Have you considered writing the screenplay yourself? It's very different than writing a book but I ask because I did it and I absolutely loved the process.

Robin Gregory

Ishanee Bawankar Congratulations on your book! It sounds interesting. If you really don't want to adapt it yourself, there are 3 things you might consider:

1) Collaborate with a trusted colleague or contact

2) Hire a WGA signatory with credits that will help get it attention.

3) Sell the option to a producer to adapt the book

If the producer asks for money up front, beware. There are legions of scammers around-- even producers with IMDb credits, who charge to write a screenplay and promise to help sell it, but then either cut all ties or claim, "Nobody's taking it." You are left with a HUGE challenge--to sell the script on your own..

Ishanee Bawankar

Hi Leonardo and Robin,

Thank you both for sharing your experiences and suggestions- I truly appreciate it.

I initially did consider writing the screenplay by myself but now I'm exploring collaborations with experienced screenwriters to ensure the adaptation stays true to the tone and pacing of the book while meeting production demands.

And thank you Robin Gregory! I'll definitely look into WGA and accordingly decide the path that will suit my story the best.

Hi Ishanee Bawankar Ishanee I'd love to discuss this further.

Stefano Pavone

I'm in the same boat. I recommend partnering with someone who has a bit more experience in screenplays if your background is in novels, just like mine.

Phoenix Black

Congratulations! Huge achievement!

Ishanee Bawankar

Thank you, Stefano and Phoenix! Really appreciate the encouragement- and Stefano, thanks for the advice as well will surely keep that in mind.

@Ishanee Extracting the meat of the plot is the first crucial step for conversion. A novel even with thousands of pages can have little visual action screen time. Collaborations I’ve done we “added” to original story.

Norman Welthagen

Your story sounds wonderful. hy wouldn't you want to adapt it yourself?

Greg Lyon

Interesting situation turning a book into a screenplay. As a book, you have full control of the story - what the settings are, what your characters look like, etc. This I call color. When writing a screenplay, you often strip a lot of the color out of the story that the director puts back in the way he likes. For example, look at Jack Reacher. In the book, Jack was a big hulking ex-military. In the movies, Tom Cruise liked the role and played Jack. Then the tv series returned Jack a big hulking guy. So the challenge is to put enough detail into the screenplay to tell the story. Alan Alda stars in a film called "Sweet Liberty" in which his book gets completely changed when it is turned into a movie. Great film to watch.

I can help you turn it into a screenplay. I actually have a screenplay that I want to turn into a book. Maybe we can help each other. gklyon@halfmoonfilms.biz

Ishanee Bawankar

Thanks, Debbie- that's exactly been the challenge and the excitement! Condensing such a layered plot into strong visual action while still keeping its emotional depth has been an intense process. I'm working closely with a screenwriter now to make sure the essence survives the transition.

Ishanee Bawankar

Thank you, Norman! Initially, I did consider adapting it myself but I decided to bring in a professional so I can ensure the structure, pacing, and cinematic flow are right from the start. That said, I'm staying closely involved in every step to preserve the voice and tone.
