Screenwriting : Scammers Beware by Matthew Gross

Matthew Gross

Scammers Beware

I want to share something with the Stage 32 community as a word of caution.

I recently received a message on Stage 32 from someone claiming to be a well-known actor I respect, offering to help with my screenwriting career. While the message sounded encouraging, a few things didn’t sit right with me. I ran the message through AI to analyze it, and several red flags came up suggesting the possibility of impersonation or deceptive intent.

Out of an abundance of caution, I reported the account to Stage 32 and also contacted the actor’s manager, providing screenshots of the messages I received. If someone is misusing this actor’s identity, I believe the actor deserves to know so it can be addressed properly.

I’m sharing this not to create fear, but awareness. In 2026, with how advanced AI and impersonation tactics have become, it’s more important than ever that we protect ourselves and each other as creatives.

To be clear: I am not a talent manager, agent, producer, or studio executive. I’m just like you—a fellow screenwriter navigating this industry and learning as I go. If something feels off, trust your instincts, take your time, and verify before engaging further.

Please stay safe out there, and thank you to Stage 32 for taking reports like this seriously and looking out for the community.

before you share any of your scripts make sure they are copy right protected with the MPA. I won’t show until I register it with them.

Thanks for reporting the account and warning everyone, Matthew Gross!

Do you mean register with the U.S. Copyright Office/the Copyright Office in another country, Samuel McKenna?

Thanks for the heads up. It's crazy how far scammers take it..

John Fife The scammer made the mistake of pretending to be an actor from an IFC sci-fi film I just happen to love. When I checked the actors IMDB page, it showed he has produced and directed short films. There were no feature or TV titles on his producing IMDB resume. And he indicated he had a Gmail account. The actor has a production company with email through his company.

At least you took care of it and contacted the actor's manager. More than most would do.
