Write a lot. Read a lot. Maybe take some classes that focus on creative writing, grammar, etc. You have to get a firm grasp on those aspects of writing before you can focus on improving your craft in other ways.
You could also write and shoot your own short film, enter it in some contests, generate some heat that way.
This is the holy grail. Listen to every Austin Film Festival podcast. You'll hear hundreds of writers explain how they did it. If we knew we would have done it and not be hear talking about it. Not being negative, just honest. Great work always wins.
It's as simple (and complex) as having that great script and right contacts at just the right time. You have that great script, right? One that will attract top talent in front of and behind the lens? One that people will pay to see over and over? Good. Now you need the right contacts and the perfect timing. Send out your query letters starting right away. You're already in the business as a crafty and music supervisor so get that script to people you know and ask them to refer you to people they know.
Agree with everyone above me here. Use the resources offered here, as webinars, classes, consulting, and most importantly Pitch sections. I recommend the live ones, but keep in mind you only get 8 minutes, so know your screenplay inside out. Good luck.
That's simple. Just develop a compelling story with unique characters that has broad audience appeal. Script it in a generally accepted industry standard format and take it wide on the strip. Or start small and work your way up.
