Stage 32 Meetups : Hampton Roads Rendezvous by Jesse Gray

Jesse Gray

Hampton Roads Rendezvous

Hey Folks! I just moved to Newport News, VA, and I was hoping to meet some people with a shared passion for film in the area. Anyone have an interest in a bit o' old school networking? (I apologize if someone has already made a request for this area...not sure how to search locations.) Cheers!

Paul Hubbard

I'd be interested. I just finished my first screenplay and am trying to learn the ropes as a screenwriter.

Jesse Gray

Hey Paul! Thanks for the reply. Congratulations on finishing the screenplay--that's a heckuva an accomplishment. ...Doesn't seem like there's a big crowd in the area (at least on Stage 32), but I'd be down for meeting somewhere in the next week or so if you'd be up for it.

Paul Hubbard

Cool. I'm sure we can work something out.

Paul Hubbard

Have you written a lot?

Lars Di Scenza

Hey guys, I'm in Hampton and I just finished my studies in Cinematography. I'd love to meet more people up on the peninsula who are into film!

Amanda Toney - Stage 32 Next Level Education

When you guys do your meet up, don't forget to take a photo and send it in to Stage 32. We'd love you to help us celebrate our 3 year anniversary! https://www.stage32.com/blog/Stage-32-is-Celebrating-3-Years-Come-Celebr...

Russ Fulmore

Hey, i'm open to a meet up. I'm over in Norfolk and friends with Lars.

Lars Di Scenza

I'm all up for a meeting with you guys.

Jesse Gray

Hey Russ and Lars--thank you for the reply! I can make the trip to the South Side, but weekends are typically much better for me. Do you all have a free weekend in the next month, or would you prefer to schedule something on an evening during the week?

Lars Di Scenza

Fridays and Saturdays work best for me at the moment, but after next week, weekends are fine. I'm in Hampton, so I can go either direction to meet up.

Jesse Gray

Good deal! Would you be down with trying something this Saturday? I can wait a few weeks if that's better for you, but if you have a window o' time, right now I'm clear all day Saturday.

Lars Di Scenza

Hey Jesse. Sorry to be so late in answering. I'm filming and recording a podcast this week. Next week might be doable.

Jesse Gray

No worries--busy is a good thing! --Okay, we'll tentatively plan for next week. One day looking particularly ripe for you, or do you want to wait a little later to see? I'm free and clear on all counts for the time being, so it'll mostly be what works best for you.

Russ Fulmore

Jesse, I'm good for the weekends after this one until October.

Jesse Gray

Great, Russ! Sounds like next weekend (or possibly weekday) would work for Lars too, and I'm free and clear so far. Hopefully we can get a time that works for everyone.

David Gomes

Sounds great! So far, this weekend is good for me.

Jesse Gray

Cool deal. Saturday okay with everyone? ...Just realized we need a venue! We just want to do a restaurant with a more/less centralized location? Russ, you're South Side/Norfolk, right? I think Lars is Peninsula...David, where are you? Paul, you still tracking?

Brent Hobin

Wish I could make it; working a show at Chrysler Hall this Sat. Hopefully I can make it some other time. I would like to meet you guys.

Russ Fulmore

I'm in the O.V. area of Norfolk. Not too familiar with NN to suggest a venue to meet.

Jesse Gray

I don't mind going out that way if everyone else can make the trip. Lars, David, Paul--would Norfolk work for you guys? Russ, is there any place off hand you could suggest? My only suggestion might be some place like the Green Turtle in Hampton or something. Sorry folks...I'm not a great facilitator. I just moved out here in June, so I haven't gotten to see that many places to suggest. Brent, sorry you can't make it out this time, but hopefully a network of sorts will come out of this and there will be more meetings.

Travis Seppala

This thread only JUST appeared in my e-mail. I'd be down depending on the when and where.

Jesse Gray

Ha! Happy to have ya, Travis. We're still working out the when and where, actually. I'm not terribly familiar with the area just yet, so if you have a suggestion on a venue, that'd be a huge help. Right now Saturday seems to be the general consensus, only question is what time. I'm gonna whimsically throw out "high noon", just 'cause. My schedule after 11am is pretty open, so if anyone has any preference, let us know.

Travis Seppala

I'm in Virginia Beach. And on Saturdays I work my day job until 4pm. I'm not sure I can come this Saturday, though. I might be able to, but currently (when not at my day job) I'm in the midst of writing a screenplay I've been hired to write. The producer paying me wants a 1st draft soon, so me coming out this Saturday evening depends on how far along I am by then.

Jesse Gray

Good deal, Travis! I'm jealous, man...that's a great thing to have going. I don't have an issue bumping the meeting to the evening if you've made enough headway to take a break, and if that works best for most of the other folks.

Travis Seppala

No need to change it on my account. Just letting you know I can't do anything earlier in the day on Saturday due to work. So if day works for everyone else, I'll just have to sit this one out. If it's evening, I may be able to go.

Lars Di Scenza

Hey guys. Sorry for the late reply. Saturday should be good for me. My work schedule has changed as has my wife's and she works every weekend now. So, I'm happy to catch up on Saturday afternoon, but I'll have my infant son with me. The Green Turtle is pretty nice, but I'm not sure if it's baby-friendly. To be honest, I'm not sure of any places that really are because being social these past 6 months has been something of a distant memory! So, whatever works for you guys, please let me know.

Jesse Gray

No worries, Lars! I asked my friend/boss about the Green Turtle (he's lived here his whole life and is something of an expert on dining and the like, and he has a 2-year-old, so he knows about the infant element), and he said it's actually a good spot (kid-friendly). Not good after 8pm, but if we're meeting circa 2pm or so, we should be fine. Pretty quiet most times, apparently. Unless you just didn't feel like it'd be a good atmosphere for the little fella, I think we'll be okay.

Russ Fulmore

I was going to suggest the new Panera @Wards Corner in Norfolk. It's easy to find and just off of 64 as an alternate spot.

Jesse Gray

thanks Russ! That'll work!

Brent Hobin

That might actually work for me as well; depends on what time I get cut from the load in @ Chrysler...

Brent Hobin

I am not far from Wards Corner.

Lars Di Scenza

That should be alright for me, too. What time? Late afternoon onwards doesn't work for me as I have an interview and a podcast to record.

Jesse Gray

1:30pm? Late enough to miss the lunch crowd, early enough to have had a good talk by 3:30ish. ...In theory...

Lars Di Scenza

That works for me. The boy is usually awake from his afternoon nap anyways. It'll mean a bit of a trek back up to the peninsula with afternoon traffic at the HRBT, though.

Jesse Gray

Aw crap, I forgot about that! Cripes. Ah well. I'm okay if everyone else is. Suffering for the craft!

Russ Fulmore

It works for me.

Jesse Gray

Huzzah! So we've got it: Panera @ Ward's Corner in Norfolk at 1:30pm on Saturday. Pre-production on Sunday, shoot Mon-Thurs, post on Fri, premiere for friends and family on Sat, and theatrical release on Sun.

Brent Hobin

Yeah, I can try to make that as well. Look forward to meeting everyone!

Jesse Gray

Hey fellas. Not to sound like a total goob, but I don't know Norfolk that well. The Panera at Ward's Corner...is that the one off West 21st Street? The website has that and one off North Military Highway listed as Norfolk locations...

Brent Hobin

No worries. This one is brand new and is at the corner of Granby & Little Creek in front of the brand new Harris Teeter. Hope this helps.

Jesse Gray

Solid. Thanks, Brent! That does indeed help!

Russ Fulmore

Hey guys, Jesse is correct, it's not Panera on Wards, it's Starbucks. Anyone have a problem with that?

Jesse Gray

Ahhhh. Interesting. I'm still cool with it. I think the key is avoiding places with servers. Didn't even think about it, but if we're sitting for any amount of time, we don't want to be taking up a table (ie income) for servers. Starbucks works for me; I figure 1:30 will still be slower time for them, and we can find a corner that'll accommodate our cadre of film folk. Might even get some comfy chairs!

Brent Hobin

No worries. Sounds good!

Russ Fulmore

Ok, I'm there.

Lee Chavis

Ocean View Pier (bar) and Greenies are two great places for meet-ups -- just for future reference.

Travis Seppala

Have fun, guys. I'll be there in spirit, I guess. lol

Jesse Gray

Sorry we'll miss ya, Travis. Maybe next time we can do something a bit later at Greenies like Lee suggested. Can't have too many conversations 'bout film!

Lars Di Scenza

Ok guys, I'll see you at Starbucks @ 1:30!

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

Hey everyone! Make sure to send me photos of your meetup so we can feature you at our party :) Have fun!! My email is julie@stage32.com

Jesse Gray

Okay...I'm here. Admittedly early. Near the entrance wearing a Captain America t-shirt. Seems to be a bit crowded, but there are still tables. Look forward to meeting ya'll!

Jesse Gray

Julie, I'm very sorry to report that I didn't get any snaps of the group at our meeting today. I submit that my negligence is a testimony of sorts to the quality and depth of our conversation; so focused was I on the topics at hand that any peripheral thoughts were completely lost until afterwards. --I'd like to thank Lars, Russ, Paul and Brent for coming out and getting the gates of communication open. There's creative blood and unified vision in HR, folks! If you're interested but missed the meeting, reach out so we can at least get information out to you for upcoming projects. Came away very excited about the possibilities!

Lars Di Scenza

Actually, I did manage to snap a pic of two of us, with Paul's help today. I'll email them over to Julie.

Lars Di Scenza

Although it does look like we missed one of Brent. Sorry about that!!

Jesse Gray

Faboo, Lars! --Sorry Brent! We'll getcha next time!

Russ Fulmore

Great meeting with all of you today and I'm encouraged and excited for future collaborations.

Brent Hobin

It's ok; my hair wasn't done anyway...

Lee Chavis

I'm hoping to be at the next meet-up. My schedule doesn't give me much flexibility at the moment. October will be a good month. Let me know if you're interested.

Russ Fulmore

Hey, I forgot to mention that I have uploaded Season 1 of Precinct 757 here so you can check it out. Thanks again for coming out yesterday I'm looking forward to working with all of you.

Jesse Gray

Awesome! I'll check it out!

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

Lars - looking forward to the photos. Jesse thanks for putting this all together. Can't wait to see an awesome collaborative project coming out of your area :) we'll feature the photos at our 3 year party here in LA!

Jesse Gray

Thank you Julie, although the meeting itself turned into a collaborative effort. A hint of things to come!

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

Can't wait to hear what shakes out!
