Writing with Fountain format?

Hi everyone, is anyone here familiar with the fountain.io screenwriting format? I've been using it for quite a bit of time and was curious how well known it was.

Bill Costantini

Isn't that the John August product? I've never used it. Does it let you cleanly import your Fountain file into FinalDraft without any screwups?

Stephen M. Levinson

Yea. Final Draft supports fountain so you can import fountain files into Final draft or export from his app to FDX format. It's not as feature packed as Final Draft, but most of the final draft features I don't even use

Bill Costantini

Stephen - that's cool, and worth exploring. My thing is....I'm a long-hand writer onto paper and hate typing anything longer than short messages or emails into tablets or phones. The buttons are just too small and I can write much faster, and even if I have to enter it on my computer in the second step later. That two-step process also allows me to do additional writing and re-writing. And I do a lot of little cues and graphics on my pages as I write. But I can certainly see the benefit to those who have a different process than I do. Good luck and happy writing, Stephen!

Stephen M. Levinson

Cool Bill, interesting to hear your process! Sounds very unique to you and a great outside perspective

Jorge J Prieto

Stephen: Fountain? Is it an App? How do you access it. I'm curious, never heard of it.

Stephen M. Levinson

Jorge, it's not really an app it's more like a way of writing like markdown. So any app can support is (all screenwriting apps seem to support it). Basically you write without margins and then it turns your writing into a formatted script.

Thanks, Stephen. I never, except once, outline, once I got my beginning and my ending, I hit the laptop Magic Screenwriter and write at least 3 pages a day. Thanks for sharing. Hey what works for you, works for you and by sharing it, you are helping us here. Please keep posting.

Stephen M. Levinson

Is 3 pages a day a good number to hit when writing? Also just a little more clarity with fountain, it has outlining but it's mainly for the actual writing. So if you start a line with all caps like JONATHAN it automatically knows that's a character and the line under is dialogue so when you preview it looks like a standard script. It basically does the formatting for you. So you write like below, and it handles the formatting. Int. House - morning Jon goes to the store JON This is a great store

Jorge J Prieto

Sounds great! Now, this can only be purchased (it's like a program I gather) through John August, website?

Stephen M. Levinson

John open sourced the format but also came up with his own paid app called Highland and there are a couple other paid ones like Slugline, but I use the free one for mac called "Writer"

Stephen M. Levinson

There are a list of apps that write with the fountain format http://fountain.io/apps

Stephen, thanks buddy. I'll check it out for Windows.
