Who attended the American Film Market this year? How it went for you?

This was our first attempt at the AFM, and considering we only have two movies in development I have to admit it went quite good for us so far, and while we're still contracting with buyers, I was curious to know how it went for others, let's share stories and experiences, let's connect!

Hi Alan, we attended this year - did you happen to catch Richard "RB" Botto 's panel on Sunday about film financing? Was really enlightening for indie filmmakers.

Christopher McDonell

Hi Alan, this was my first year attending the AFM. I spent days researching and compiling a list of target distributors by cross-referencing the film catalogue with companies. I have a feature-length doc I’m seeking distribution for and was able to set up a few meetings beforehand which justified my trip. I’m Canadian so add 30% to the cost of everything and it’s a bit of a gamble. But it was easily one of the best career moves I’ve made in years and I highly recommend the AFM for any indie filmmakers, like me, sitting on the fence. I filled 4 days, morning to night, pitching my film in lobbies, hallways, offices, elevators, poolside, restaurants, even cafes several blocks away. Response was excellent and discussions with several distributors and sales agents are ongoing. If anyone reading this is planning to go next year, know your pitch, do up some flyers, and have your trailer cued up on your laptop and ready to play. I was pulling my laptop out everywhere.

Thank you Christopher McDonell for sharing, we also attended the AFM for the first year, and yes, I recommend this event to everybody out there looking for business. As you mentioned, response was excellent, and yes, while we also have some ongoing discussions with distributors, the most important thing is that all this interest tickled our investors that decided to double their investments in our movies, so definetely yes!, AFM is the right spot to pitch your project!

Christopher McDonell

Right on! I’m finding the same. The AFM is considered a litmus test by some. If response to your film is good, good things happen when you come home.

Rodney Wild

We also went to AFM, we got some interest from buyers but the one thing that helped us was the fact that we had partners in L.A. that helped us on our cartoon (for TV) project and that helped off set the risk. Would I go again next year .... not sure yet.
