Yesterday, I received feedback from We Screenplay for a pilot. The reader actually said It was great writing and it would not feel like a chore to read a few more pages. He also provided me with a nice list of why the script was engaging. As a screenwriter, what do you do to ensure your scripts are engaging?

I set the destination but let the characters drive. Most of the time they take very interesting detours and very scenic routes.

Creative character traits, goals, obstacles, twists. My modus operandi.

Phillip, I work to make my scripts engaging by focusing on the characters and their interactions with each other.

I focus on character chemistry, avoid unnecessary exposition and break the scene descriptions down into their core components to minimise the reader's eye-work.
I also let the characters drive the plot rather than the plot driving the characters. I try to keep action scenes as brief as possible. I cut everything that doesn't advance the plot, build the world, or reveal something about the characters.

First off, congrats on the script getting such a positive feedback.
For me, I aim to write characters that form a bond with the reader. I try to make an emotional connection to the audience. When you read it, it should evoke emotion as the characters experience highs and lows.
