Screenwriting : The Marathon by Imo Wimana Chadband

Imo Wimana Chadband

The Marathon

The voices never quite disappear;

Sunrise, sunset…it’s a constant reminder

of what I’ve done, or haven’t done to be exact.

They claw at my mind, screaming for freedom.

Locked behind walls to which only I hold the key.

I drop to their feet, begging forgiveness,

but with every grace granted in their mercy,

repetition knows my transgressions.

Betrayal was never my nature, but here I stand,

neglecting the very things that made me feel alive.

But it’s not my intent…It’s just…I’m in a fight against time,

and it has me on the ropes.

My punches lack the power they once had behind their conviction.

My will, even though burning, lacks the stamina to upkeep my passion.

I’ve been knocked to the mat more times than I’d like to admit,

But…I find solace in the fact that I still stand…I still fight….

The screams never cease. They grow louder, and louder with

every drop of time’s sand; calling me, shouting me, saving me.

The bell rings, and the 12th round commences.

The voices birth new strength within. My stamina replenishes.

My resolve finds focus. My stare piercing ahead.

My fire bursts into a blaze, and for the first time in a while,

I notice the fear in time’s eyes. I step forward, it steps back.

I step forward, it steps back…

Piece, by piece, it fades as our distance closes,

until, all left in the ring, was myself.

I close my eyes, and turn the key,

unlocking the stories chained to my mind.

Our eyes shed all of the pent-up emotion.

We embrace as I say my thanks for their strength.

Even when my path saw hindrances,

their faith never wavered.

Reunited, and it feels oh so good.

My fingers caress the keyboard of my laptop

like lovers long craving each other’s touch…

Tap, tap, tap, “FADE IN…”

And the feeling all returns…I’m alive again.
